Biographical Note

Dorothea Cross Leighton (née Dorothea Cross) was born in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, on September 2, 1908. Her parents were Frederick Cushing and Dorothea (Farquhar) Cross. She received her A.B. from Bryn Mawr College in 1930 and her M.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1936.

From 1930 to 1932, Dorothea Leighton was a chemistry technician at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by a position as an intern in medicine at Baltimore City Hospitals from 1936 to 1937. She was house official psychiatrist from 1937 to 1939.

Alexander Hamilton Leighton was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 17, 1908. He received his B.A. at Princeton University in 1932, M.A. in physiology at Cambridge University in 1934, and a M.D. at Johns Hopkins University in 1936. Leighton was awarded an honorary degree by Harvard University in 1966.

Dorothea Cross and Alexander H. Leighton married on August 17, 1937. The Leightons had two children, Frederick A. Leighton and Dorothea (Doreen) G. Leighton.

In 1937, the Leightons began their training in psychiatry in Baltimore, Maryland. Around this time, they heard that anthropologist Ralph Linton would be conducting a seminar with psychoanalyst Abram Kardiner in New York. The Leightons attended several of these seminars. In the fall of 1939, they also audited several anthropology courses at Columbia University in New York City. Based on their exposure to anthropology, the Leightons received a joint post-doctoral Research Training Fellowship at the Social Science Resource Council; Clyde Kluckhohn served as one of their advisors.

At Kluckhohn's suggestion, in late December of 1939, the Leightons travelled to Gallup, New Mexico, to find a Navajo interpreter who would help them with field work for their fellowship. They lived in a hogan near their interpreter from January through May 1940. During this time, the Leightons collected "life stories" from 9 Navajo people, whom they identified by pseudonyms. They then traveled to St. Lawrence Island, west of mainland Alaska, to conduct research with Inuit people (then identified by the Leightons as "Eskimos"). The Leightons blended anthropological research techniques with psychiatric techniques and psychological studies, often writing about the purported "personality" or "character" of the Indigenous peoples they researched.

In September 1941, the Department of the Interior initiated the Indian Personality, Education, and Administration Research (also referred to as the Indian Personality and Government Research, or the Indian Education Research Project) in conjunction with the University of Chicago and the United States Office of Indian Affairs. This project, which lasted from 1941 to 1947, was directed by John Collier, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, and coordinated by Laura Thompson. The Leightons were hired to study Navajo culture. The Drs. Leighton served as a Special Research Physicians from 1941 to 1945. With the support of D'Arcy McNickle (Salish-Kutenai), they published The Navaho [Navajo] Door: An Introduction to Navaho Life in 1944. In 1947, Dorothea Leighton and Clyde Kluckhohn published Children of the People: The Navaho Individual and His Development, based on their research with Navajo children for the Indian Education, Personality, and Administration Research Project.

In 1942, Alexander Leighton was directed by John Collier, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, to set up a research unit at a Japanese-American internment camp in Poston, Arizona, (known as Poston War Relocation Center or Poston Concentration Camp). The Office of Indian Affairs had become responsible for the Poston center in March of 1942; the camp itself was built on the land of the Colorado River Indian Reservation (Chemehuevi, Mohave, Hopi, and Navajo peoples), despite objections from the tribal council. Leighton arrived at Poston in June 1942. His goals were to analyze the attitude of interned people and make recommendations as to the administration of the camp, as well as "to train field workers of Japanese ancestry in social analysis so that they could be helpful in occupied areas of the Pacific, during or after the war," as he wrote in The Governing of Men.

Leighton was soon joined by other white anthropologists and social scientists to assist in setting up the project, notably Edward Spicer and Elizabeth Colson, who remained as full time staff. They established the Bureau of Sociological Research, Poston. Leighton, Colson, and Spicer soon decided to train interned Japanese-American people as field workers in the social sciences, expanding their research staff to include Hisako Fujii, Misao Furata, Iwao Ishino, Mary Kinoshita, June Kushino, Yoshiharu Matsumoto, Florence Mohri, Akiko Nishimoto, Tom Sasaki, Jyuichi Sato, James Sera, Gene Sogioka, Chica Sugino, George Yamaguchi, Toshio Yatsushiro, and Kazue Uyeno. The research project was completed 15 months later in September 1943, nearly a year after the Poston Strike in November 1942. Leighton then served as a leader of the United States Strategic Bombing Survey in Japan beginning in 1944, together with Tom Sasaki from the Bureau of Sociological Research, Poston. Alexander Leighton published a book-length report based on his work in Poston, The Governing of Men: General Principles and Recommendations Based on Experience at a Japanese Relocation Camp, in 1945.

In 1946, Alexander Leighton was appointed Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Cornell University, a role he held until 1966. Between 1948 and 1952, Leighton, together with Edward (Ned) Spicer (now faculty at the University of Arizona in Tucson), John Adair, Tom Sasaki, and Henry Dobyns, developed and ran the Field Seminar in Applied Anthropology for the Cornell University Department of Anthropology and Sociology. This seminar was also referred to as the Cornell University Southwest Project and the Fruitland Project. The Cornell field seminars focused specifically on Southwestern Indigenous and Mexican-American communities The Carnegie Foundation and Russel Sage Foundation financially supported summer sessions in the Southwest between 1949 and 1952.

In 1948, Alexander Leighton, Adair, and Sasaki set up a course instruction site in Flagstaff, Arizona in cooperation with the United States Forest Service, as well as sites in Tucson at the University of Arizona, in Flagstaff at Arizona State Teachers College (now Northern Arizona University), and on the Navajo Nation and Tohono O'odham tribal lands. Henry Dobyns, a graduate student of Spicer's at the University of Arizona, led the research on the Tohono O'odham Reservation, while Sasaki conducted research in Fruitland, New Mexico, on the Navajo Nation for his doctoral dissertation. Based on this research, Sasaki published Fruitland, New Mexico: A Navaho Community in Transition in 1960 with Cornell University Press.

Documents about the Fruitland Project describe it as follows: "The aim of this project is the establishment in the Southwest of two `field laboratories' in applied anthropology; specifically, the focus will be research on human relations in agricultural extension. The field laboratories are conceived as communities in which efforts are being made by outsiders to raise the level of subsistence through introduction of agricultural techniques current in modern western culture. Laboratory conditions will be established by the introduction of anthropologists to observe, record, and analyze the processes of introduction and the effects on the community ... The research, therefore, has two co-equally important objectives: 1) the discovery and testing of principles in human relations; and 2) the development and improvement of agriculture."

Meanwhile, Alexander Leighton initiated a longitudinal study of the epidemiology of psychiatric disorders known as the Stirling County Study, together with Jane Murphy and other researchers, in 1948. He served as Director of the Stirling County Study until 1975, when Murphy assumed leadership of the study. In 1959, Alexander Leighton published My Name is Legion: Foundations for a Theory of Man in Relation to Culture, Volume I, The Stirling County Study of Psychiatric Disorder & Sociocultural Environment. In 1963, Alexander and Dorothea Leighton, John S. Harding, Allister M. McMillan, and David B. Macklin published The Character of Danger: Psychiatric Symptoms in Selected Communities, a follow up to My Name is Legion.

In 1949, Dorothea and Alexander Leighton published Gregorio, the Hand-Trembler: A Psychobiological Personality Study of a Navaho [Navajo] Indian, with the assistance of Catherine Opler. The report was the first in a series published by Harvard's Peabody Museum focused on the "Ramah Navaho," research overseen by Clyde Kluckhohn, based on fieldwork done by the Leightons between 1940 and 1945. Alexander Leighton published Human Relations In A Changing World: Observations On The Use Of The Social Sciences, drawing upon his "wartime analysis of Japanese morale" at Poston the same year.

Between 1949 and 1952, Dorothea Leighton served as Professor of Child Development and Family Relations at New York State School of Home Economics, Cornell University. She then worked as Senior Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, 1952 through 1965, Assistant Professor at the Psychiatric Medical College, 1954 through 1958, and Associate Professor, 1959 through 1965.

In 1963, Dorothea and Alexander Leighton published Psychiatric Disorder among the Yoruba: A Report from the Cornell-Aro Mental Health Research Project in the Western Region, Nigeria together with T. Adcoye Lambo, Charles G. Hughes, Jane M. Murphy, and David B. Macklin.

Dorothea Leighton and Alexander Leighton divorced in October 1965. Alexander Leighton subsequently married Jane Murphy.

In 1966, Dorothea Leighton and John Adair published People of the Middle Place: A Study of the Zuni Indians , based at least in part research from 1941 as part of the Indian Education, Personality, and Administration Research project.

Alexander Leighton joined the faculty of the Harvard School of Public Health in 1966, serving as chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences. He also held many other professional roles, such as Director of the Program for Social Psychiatrists, Cornell University, 1955-66; Consultant, Surgeon General's Advisorial Committee on Indian Affairs, 1956-59; Technical Adviser, Milbank Memorial Fund, 1956-63; Professor of Social Psychiatry, Medical College, 1956-66; Fellow, Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Science, 1957-58; member, Expert Advisorial Panel on Mental Health, WHO, 1957-75; member, Sub-Panel on Behavioral Science, President's Scientific Advisory Committee, 1961-62; Consultant, Peace Corps, 1961-63; Reflective Fellow, Carnegie Corporation, 1962-63; member, Committee on the Effects of Herbicides in Vietnam, National Academy of Science, 1971-72; member, Consulting Committee on Mental Health Resources, Department of National Health and Welfare, Canada, 1982- ; and a Professor of Social Psychiatry and Head, Department of Behavioral Sciences, 1966 to 1975, and Professor Emeritus of Social Psychiatry, Harvard School of Public Health, 1975-2007. In addition to other books, Alexander H. Leighton wrote and published An Introduction to Social Psychiatry in 1960, as well as a novel titled Come Near (1971) and Caring for Mentally Ill People: Psychological and Social Barriers in Historical Context (1982).

Dorothea Leighton served as Professor of Mental Health at the School of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1965 to 1974, and Chairman of the Department from 1972 to 1974. She was Professor Emeritus of Mental Health at Chapel Hill and at the Department of Epidemiology and Internal Health, University of California, San Francisco from 1974 until her death in 1992.

Dorothea Cross Leighton died in 1992. Alexander H. Leighton died August 11, 2007 in Nova Scotia, Canada.

This series contains fueld notes created and gathered by the Leightons, such as 3 3-ring, loose-leaf binders of Leighton journal notes from the early 1940s; loose-leaf Navajo subject and name indexes; four boxes of quotations and references compiled from field notes concerning "threats (quotations and analysis)," "opinion and attitudes," and "satisfactions"; and notes of psychological tests given to Ramah area Navajo children by Dorothea Cross Leighton. The remaining field notes were collected by Alexander and Dorothea Cross Leighton's colleagues Tom Sasaki, John Adair, Kennedy, So Hong, M. A. Tremblay, Seymour Parker, Cliff Barnetts, and Laila Shurky. Also included in this series are Collier and Ross field notes from 1953 of photo and non-photo interviews of fourteen Navajo informants. During the photo interviews, the informant viewed photographs of farming activities in the New Mexico region of the Navajo Reservation and described people, places, and events. Photographs are not included.
Arrangement
Material in this series was grouped into files by the associated researcher, including Dorothea Cross Leighton, Alexander Leighton, Tom Sasaki, and others.

NAU.PH.83.3 Photographs circa 1940-1950 bulk 1940-1942 (610 photographs, including 604 black-and-white prints and 8 slides)
Scope & Contents
This collection consists of 604 black-and-white photographs and 8 slides taken and collected by Dorothea Cross and Alexander H. Leighton. The images primarily depict scenes from the Navajo Reservation and Four Corners area in the years before America's involvement in World War II, including views of the Navajo people and their dwellings, property, hospitals, schools, livestock, craftwork, and various day to day activities, as well as landscape images from the Southwest including El Morro, Bandelier National Monument, and Rainbow Bridge National Monument. These images, divided into six series, are ordered in a numerical sequence based on chronological and thematic considerations. The titles of the images are attributable to several individuals including Dorothea and Alexander Leighton, Marie Cody (a relative of the Leighton's Navajo host family), and Special Collections intern Chris Johnson. The photographs were taken by the Leightons, Helen Post, Navajo Service photographer Milton Snow and personnel from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Mesa Verde National Park.
Arrangement
Chris Johnson, under the direction of Laine Sutherland, organized the Dorothea Cross and Alexander H. Leighton photographs into 6 series based on original notes by the Leightons which accompanied the photographs. This original information is now found Box 1, Folder 17A of the Manuscripts portion of the Dorothea Cross and Alexander H. Leighton Papers (NAU.MS.216).
Where no original order for the images could be determined, Special Collections and Archives staff organized photographs according to topic, photographer, and photographic process.
Many of the titles provided for photographs are original and attributed to Dorothea and Alexander Leight. Marie Cody identified and titled other photographs based on personal knowledge of people pictured. These titles are noted in quotation marks.
Chris Johnson provided titles for the remaining photographs during processing of the collection in the 1990s.
Processing Information
Photographs from the Dorothea Cross and Alexander H. Leighton Papers were originally separated from manuscript materials in 1991 by Laine Sutherland and Richard Quartaroli.
Chris Johnson processed photographic materials from the Leighton papers in the fall of 1995 and winter of 1996, creating the Dorothea C. and Alexander H. Leighton Collection [photographs].
Marie Cody assisted Special Collections and Archives in identifying people pictured in the photographs during roughly the same time period.
Photographic materials were reunited intellectually with manuscript materials created by the Leightons sometime after 2001.
Use Restrictions
Navajo people depicted in the Dorothea Cross and Alexander H. Leighton papers are identified by pseudonyms in both manuscript and photographic materials. Please see the collection-level Conditions Governing Use note for more information.
Series 1: Leighton strips, identified 1940-1942 451 Photographic images
Scope & Contents
The bulk of the photographs in Series 1 of the Dorothea Cross and Alexander H. Leighton papers were taken by the Leightons during their stay with a Navajo family near Ramah, New Mexico from January 15, 1940 to May 15, 1940. The Leightons lived in a hogan on the property of their guest family and took several hundred photographs of Navajo people during their stay. In addition, the Leightons photodocumented their extensive travels throughout the Navajo Reservation. The Leighton photographs from this series provide excellent documentation of the Navajo people, their lifestyle, customs and social institutions during the years before World War II. During the time these pictures were taken, the Leightons were training for the field of Psychiatry and sought to collect information on the life problems of Native Americans and native ways of dealing with these problems. The Leightons and their instructors felt that these photographs could help to determine what Anthropology might be able to contribute to Psychiatry.
Also included in this series are photographs taken by Dorothea Leighton during a 1942 tour of hospital facilities on the Navajo Reservation. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) sent Dorothea Cross Leighton to these facilities in order to determine whether medical employees on the Navajo Reservation would be interested in the preparation of a book which would inform them of typical Navajo characteristics. These photographs provide an excellent record of BIA medical installations on the Navajo Reservation in the early 1940s.
All photographs in this series were originally housed in bound cardboard folders. The photographs were printed in strips of three and each folder held twelve strips. Many of the photographs in this series remain intact in their original strips, however, many of the strips are separated into individual photographs. The photographs in this series are in an order based on numbers written on the photographs by the Leightons.
Arrangement
Chris Johnson organized the photographs in Series 1 based on numbers written on the photographs by the Leightons. This included creating files based on the Leightons "strip folders" in 1991. (See Processing Information note for more details.) However, this "strip folder" information was lost in later versions of the finding aid.
In 2020, Samantha Meier restored Johnson's "strip folders" organization.
Processing Information
Chris Johnson processed the photographs in Series 1 of the Dorothea Cross and Alexander H. Leighton papers in 1995 and 1996.
Johnson noted that photographs in Series 1 were originally housed in bound cardboard folders. The photographs were printed in strips of 3 images, and each folder held 12 strips.
Many of the photographs in this series remain intact in their original strips. However, other strips have been separated into individual photographs. These are now found in Series 2.

Strip 19: Japanese American researchers from the Bureau of Sociological Research, Poston on the Navajo Nation
Scope & Contents
These photographs are believed to be images of Japanese American researchers from the Bureau of Sociological Research, Poston, a social science research bureau formed by Alexander Leighton at the Poston Relocation Center (officially Colorado River Relocation Center), a World War II internment camp near Parker, Arizona, on the Colorado River Indian Reservation. People identified in the photographs (with annotations on the backs of the images) include Alexander Leighton, Chica Sugino, Toshio Yatsushiro, Iwao Ishino, Misao Furata, Tom Sasaki, Jyuichi Sato, George Yamaguchi, Hisako Fujii, Edward (Ned) Spicer, Gene Sogioka, and Florence Mohri. TAnnotations further indicate that the photographs were taken in Window Rock and Tuba City, Arizona on the Navajo Nation.
Annotations on the back of the prints could either be identifying information or information on which members of the Bureau of Sociological Research, Poston, requested copies of the image. Occasional notations like 15 cents suggest the latter.

Series 2: Leighton strip photos, individual 1940-1942 36 Photographic images
Scope & Contents
