Sam Day, Sr. (1845-1925) arrived in Arizona in 1883 to survey extensions to eastern and southern boundaries of the Navajo Indian Reservation (Navajo Nation) for the federal government. At the time his wife, Anna, and their three boys Sam, Jr. (1882-1963), Charles Day (1879-1918) and William remained in Colorado. The family joined Sam, Sr. in Arizona, where they staked out a homestead at Cienaga (Sinagee). He was elected to the Arizona Territorial Legislature in 1906 and served two terms in the Arizona House. Sam, Sr., moved from Sinagee in 1901. His Sinagee ranch became part of the St. Michaels Mission. He joined son Charlie at Bill Meadows trading post, but eventually moved to the mouth of Canyon de Chelly and with his sons, Sam, Jr. and William, established what was to become the famous Thunderbird Trading Post.
Sam's sons also entered into trading on tribal lands. Charlie operated the Meadows trading post until his untimely death in an automobile accident in 1918. Charles was known for his strong interest in documenting Navajo culture. He took photographs as well as created field recordings. He served as Edward S. Curtis' interpreter during the photographers trip to the reservation. In 1903 Charlie was appointed custodian of Canyon De Chelly and Canyon del Muerto.
Sam Day Jr., second son of Samuel Sr., in addition to his work as an Indian trader, served as United States deputy marshal. Sam Day Jr. married Kate Roanhorse daughter of chief Manuelito, in 1912. He, like his brother became submersed in Navajo culture. He participated in a University of Arizona archaelogical dig in 1926 and helped facilitate other university expeditions.
For a fuller biographical account of the Day family see "Sam Day and His Boys: Good Neighbors to the Navajos," by Clifford Trafzer in Journal of Arizona History, Spring 1977.
The collection of Day family papers has been organized around family members. Each of the first four series represent material that ties directly to one of the family members. The final four series are business records from the different trading posts that the Day's operated, ephemera detailing different aspects of life on the Navajo reservation, and material related to Navajo culture.
The papers of Samuel Day Sr. include personal and business correspondence including newspaper clippings, subpoenas, tax collection notices and receipts, deeds, and United States and State of Arizona government documents. The papers of Anna Day include mostly personal papers detailing the activities of family and friends, bank statements, holiday greetings, U.S. government documents, a geological map of Navajo County, and a lock of hair from Samuel Day Sr. The papers of Samuel Day Jr. include mostly business and professional correspondence. Of interest are letters concerning his work for the Forest Service and the Indian Commission. Especially interesting is the information on people digging in Canyon de Chelly. Other items discuss the southern boundary of Navajo reservation, expense vouchers, letters from Fred Harvey Company, subpoenas, and a letter from Ansel Adams. The papers of Charles Day are almost entirely business related. They include orders to various companies, payments, pricing requests, bank records, business financial records, and tax receipts. Other items of interest include descriptions of the Yebichai dance and sandpaintings.
The collection also contains 91 photographs depicting trading posts and eastern Arizona scenes.
The remainder of the collection consists of material not specifically attached to anyone of the Day family. This include correspondence and documents, brochures, catalogs, maps, and newspapers detailing different aspects of life on the Navajo reservation and in the Southwest. The last part of the collection contains material related to the Navajo both politically and culturally. Business records -- receipt books, business ledgers, oral interviews, article "Sam Day and His Boys" from Journal of Arizona History (Spring 1977), company check books, and note pads.
The Day family collection contains material which may be culturally sensitive for Indigenous and Native American communities, particularly Navajo Nation (Diné). This material has not been reviewed by appropriate cultural heritage partners as of July 2024. The photograph with call number NAU.PH.120.18 is restricted and unavailable for access and use. Special Collections and Archives will consult with the appropriate cultural heritage partners and receive appropriate guidance regarding the stewardship of these materials. This access restriction aligns with and supports the Cline Library’s commitment to implementing the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials.
