Scope and Content

Collection consists of postage stamps pertaining to the history and culture of the Southwest.

Three separate stamps and stamp series are represented:

Coronado Cuarto Centennial Commemorative Stamp, issued in 1940 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado’s exploration of the Southwestern and Central United States, 1540-1542.
John Wesley Powell 1869 Expedition Centennial Commemorative Stamp, issued in 1969 in celebration of Powell’s first expedition down the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon.
Pueblo Art, part of the American Folk Art stamp series, was issued in 1977 as a set of designs depicting the pottery of four Pueblo tribes, including the Acoma, Hopi, San Ildefonso, and Zia.

Administrative Information

Custodial History

The invitation to the dedication of the Powell Memorial Museum, complete with first day cover of the Powell stamp, was given to Dr. E.B. Danson by Dr. Fred Peterson of the U.S.G.S. Dr. Danson subsequently gifted that invitation and one for the first day issue ceremonies of the Powell commemorative stamp to the Museum of Northern Arizona in 1977.
