Biographical Note

Ramón Ruso Villela (1878-1964) was born to Ramón and Gertrudis (Ruso) Villela on April 28, 1878 in La Paz, Baja California, Mexico. He married Margarita Saiz (ca. 1891-), daughter of Claro Saiz and Petra Tolano, in 1906 in La Colorado, Baja California, Mexico and the couple had ten children: Ramón (1907-1993), Francisco (1909-1992), Carlos (1913-1941), Alejandro (1917-2000), Robert (1919-1976), Socorro (Villela) Higuera (1921-), Joe S. (Santos José) (1923-2006), Gertrude (Villela) Reyes (1925-2011), Margarita (1929-1930), and Carmen (Villela) Refuerzo, (1931-). The family emigrated to the United States, where Ramón Villela worked as a farm laborer, between 1917 and 1918. They lived in Arizona before settling in California. Ramón Villela died in Fresno, California, in 1964.

This collection consists of 104 photographs documenting the Villela family, Goodyear Farms Elementary School, San Pablo (a Mexican community in Tempe), and Mexican and Mexican-American employees of Goodyear Farms and the Southwest Cotton Company.
