Historical Note
In 1920, members of the Phoenix Americanization Committee, led by E. C. Mason, Maie Bartlett Heard, John D. Loper, E. L. Downing, Mary Downing, Ellen Copper, and the U.S. Department of Education, under the leadership of Dr. Marion Neff, came together to address the needs of the growing immigrant population in Maricopa County. The Committee's priority was to improve the literacy rate among immigrants by providing them with English skills with which to attain an American citizenship. This Americanization Program led to the development and founding of Friendly House, with Carrie Ferris Green becoming its Executive Director in 1920. In May of 1931, Placida Garcia Smith was appointed Executive Director of Friendly House, which was incorporated in June of 1935. The most important factor in the history and success of Friendly House is the continuous flow of Mexican immigrants into Arizona, and its ever-present ebb and flow into Maricopa County. Since 1920, Friendly House has helped immigrants, youths, the elderly, and families; its legacy is that Friendly House helps people help themselves. Today, Friendly House remains an important and vital institution in Phoenix, Arizona.
