Biographical NoteTeacher, rancher and author; “Sister” Bourne taught at rural Arizona schools from 1914 to 1957. During that time, she taught in the Verde Valley, Baboquivari, Helvetia, Redington, Sasco, Sópori, Sasabe, and Sierrita. Her students at Redington created a newspaper called “The Little Cowpuncher”. While teaching at Redington, “Sister” homesteaded land in Peppersauce Canyon. In the 1950s, she traded that ranch for another in the Galiuro Mountains. Her books were autobiographical novels about ranching and teaching. Her first book, Woman in Levis was published in1967; it was followed by Nine Months is a Year in 1968, Ranch Schoolteacher in 1974 and a children’s book The Blue Colt in 1979. She was an active member of the Democratic party and former president of the Tri-Community Democratic Women’s Club. The Arizona Press Women named her Woman of the Year in 1973-74, in 1975 she received a Distinguished Citizen Award from the University of Arizona Alumni Association, and she was elected to the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame in 1987. Scope and ContentThis collection consists chiefly of manuscripts from published and unpublished books, book reviews and correspondence with publishers. Also present is a small amount of personal correspondence, journals, scrapbooks, and biographical information. Journals, from 1965 to 1977, contain daily diary entries about writing and ranch life. There are photographs of Redington students and their school building, Beaver Creek School, and Bourne herself as well as drawings by her students. Many of these were used in her books and the drawings were used in the newspaper. Issues of the “Little Cowpuncher” school newspaper for 1933 to 1943 are present. Various versions of typescripts are present for her published books, Blue Colt, Ranch Schoolteacher, Nine Months is a Year, and unpublished book, Love is Infernal/Never Marry a Lover. The typescripts for Ranch Schoolteacher appear to contain additional material that wasn’t used in the published version. Series List Correspondence, 1957-1980. Biographical and journals, 1930-1978.
