Biographical NoteThe State Highway 79 Association was an organization of local "civic boosters" with a vested interest in connecting Prescott, Arizona with Flagstaff, Arizona, via Oak Creek Canyon. The bridge across Wilson Canyon in Oak Creek Canyon was named after highway supporter, grocery store owner, rancher, and former Major in the National Guard, W.W. Midgley. Midgley was born in Excelsor, Minnesota in 1872, and raised in Alabama and California. He was active in the Good Roads Association before forming the State Highway 79 Association. The bridge was named in his honor because of his long support of such projects.
