The Story papers collection consists of several different
serialized newspapers that were targeted towards youth and teen readers. Story papers
are periodical works that often include serialized fiction, grand illustrations, and
smaller stories. These stories were read widely prior to World War II and could be

Biographical Note
The Story papers collection consists of several different serialized newspapers that
were targeted towards youth and teen readers. Story papers are periodical works that
often include serialized fiction, grand illustrations, and smaller stories. These
stories were read widely prior to World War II and could be purchased
individually--usually for a penny, nickel, or dime--or could be subscribed to on a
yearly basis. One of the most widely nicknames for these papers are 'penny dreadfuls,'
which often dealt with somewhat gruesome content.
Story papers were printed on thin paper and over time can begin to flake and decay.
However, they were affordable for all classes of individuals and helped increase
literacy in both Great Britain and the United States. The highest peak for story papers
ocured between World War I and World War II, during which time many of the story paper
protagonists were great heroes! But when World War II ravaged Europe, most mills and
presses were shut down and focused on the war efforts. Many small publications never
recovered. Also included in the collection are some smaller pieces, including dime
novels. Dime novels, like story papers, were cheap reads that were printed on thin
paper.
