papers of award winning author, John Weston. The bulk of the material relate to his
literary career. Items include biographical information, correspondence; published
and unpublished writings including manuscripts, short stories, poems, plays, and

and other promotional items related to his work with the theatre.

Biographical Note
John Weston (1932- ), is the award winning author of multiple novels, poems, plays,
short stories, and articles. His most notable works include "Hail, Hero!"(1969),
"The Walled Parrot" (1975), and "Goat Songs" (1971). One of his novels was nominated
for a Pulitzer Prize and two for the National Book award, he was awarded the
Commonwealth Club of California Silver Medal for his book "The Boy Who Sang the
Birds." In 1973 CBS made a feature film based on his novel "Hail, Hero!" While his
works mostly pertain to the Southwest he also served as a voice for LGBTQ rights and
education advocacy. Throughout his career he worked as a successful professor of
English at multiple institutions including California State University, Los Angeles,
and the University of Arizona where he taught creative writing and was the director
of the Poetry Center.

This collection contains personal files, reviews, correspondence, photographs, and
drafts of written work by John Weston. The majority of the materials include
manuscripts of his novels, short stories, poems, and plays. Other printed materials
include news clippings, reviews, and various journals. This series contains
information about John Weston, including his personal journal, royalty statements,
contracts, awards, photos, reviews, and his scholarship in creative writing. The
bulk of the material are reviews of John Weston as both an actor and a writer. This
series contains correspondence between John Weston and other agencies and persons.
