Biographical Note
J.B Tanner was born in 1924, in Phoenix, Arizona to Rulel "Chunky" Tanner and Stella
McGee Tanner. He was to be named after his grandfather, Joseph Baldwin Tanner, but
since he was so small, it was shortened to J.B. He was the oldest of eight children
in the Tanner family, seven boys and one girl.
J.B.'s grandfather Tanner taught him to speak Navajo when he was just sixteen, which
was a much-needed skill in running the Steamboat Trading Post in New Mexico. He also
worked at the White Comb store before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada where he worked as
a carpenter's helper, roofer, and a pipefitter's helper before being drafted and
joining the Air Force.
After his discharge from the Air Force he went to Aneth, Utah, to work with his
father and one of his brothers. It was soon after that he married Lorraine Dora
Shamp and had two children, Sherry and John.
J.B. bought the Ganado Trading Post in the mid-1950s with Jack Leonard and his
brothers Bob and Don. He worked at this trading post from 1955-1956. He was called
"Aabiich'iidii" by the Navajo, which means "the devil himself". His other business
establishments included: Navajo Shopping Center in Gamerco, New Mexico (1958-62),
J.B. Tanner Trading Co. in Yah-Ta-Hey, New Mexico (1962-94), including other
locations in New Miexco and Arizna. His other business ventures include the Rug
Auction with the Fred Harvey Corporation, and the Rug Auction with Navajo Community
College (Dine College). Also, from 1955-1999, he hosted the J.B. Tanner Radio Show
that broadcasted in New Mexico and Arizona.
