R. Sean Evans became familiar with Route 66 as a child during summer vacation travels across the U.S. Usual Routes were Yonkers, New York, to Sedona, Arizona. Later, Evans was witness to the opening of the bypass around Williams, Arizona. that ended the Route 66 era. Evans began photographing and researching Route 66 in 1989 in Arizona, expanding into California in 1990, and New Mexico in 2001.
The R. Sean Evans papers contains nearly 3,000 photographs of historic Route 66 taken by archivist and Route 66 historian and enthusiast R. Sean Evans between 1989 and 2014. Evans' photographs were predominantly taken in Arizona, but they also include images of sections of Route 66 in California, New Mexico, and other Route 66 states. Images are of the actual road (including some realignments) and any existing structures located adjacent to the road.
The R. Sean Evans papers also includes oral history interviews with important figures in the preservation of historic Route 66. These interviews were conducted between 2006 and 2019 by Evans, many with Peter Runge as cameraperson. Many were conducted in connection to Evans' role as curator of the "Route 66 in Arizona" exhibit hosted by Special Collections & Archives in 2009-2010.
