Historical NoteMeet the Pres., later retitled NAU on the Move, was a public service television program created by Northern Arizona University (NAU) to act as a "communication tool between NAU, its campus community, and the Flagstaff community at large" between 1992 and 1998. Jeanette S. Baker, Associate Vice President for University Relations, initiated and coordinated the production of Meet the Pres. between 1992 and 1998 as a public relations tool for NAU, particularly aimed at addressing financial concerns related to the university. Baker described the purpose of the television program as "to create an informal, warm, personal atmosphere where issues of concern to the campus community can be discussed in an unstructured format, provide opportunities for small groups to meet and discuss issues with the President, and give the President an opportunity to hear personally the views of faculty, staff, and community leaders...with the intent to educate and inform the university and local community." Running half an hour in length, Meet the Pres. was produced on a monthly schedule by NAU's Television Services (also known as NAU TV) and broadcast weekly on Warner Cable Channel 4, in addition to being rebroadcast on KNAZ Channel 2. It was generally taped on location at NAU's Flagstaff campus. Taped copies of the program were donated both to NAU's Cline Library and to the Flagstaff Public Library for later viewing. The program began with NAU's 12th President Eugene Hughes, who addressed topics such as the state budget process, faculty recommendations for "right-sizing" NAU's academic programs to address budgetary concerns, "right-sizing" Classified Staff positions at NAU, the Commission on Athletics, the Commission on the Status of Women, tuition and financial aid, and Interactive Instructional Television. Following the program's debut on January 6, 1993, Hughes' episodes were broadcast between January and June of 1993. Hughes resigned from the role of NAU President effective June 30, 1993. Between July 1993 and December 1993, the program featured NAU's acting President Patsy Reed. Reed's episodes included topics such as professional programs at NAU, the role of research at NAU, teacher preparation and education of future teachers, the Southwest Forest Science Center, the search for a replacement for the role of NAU's president after Eugene Hughes' resignation, NAU's economic impact for the state of Arizona and the City of Flagstaff, and Interactive Instructional Television. Reed stopped hosting the program after the Arizona Board of Regents appointed a new president and she stepped down from her role. NAU's 13th President Clara Lovett took over Meet the Pres. in February of 1994, shortly before she officially took on the role on February 28, 1994. Her first episode acted as an introduction for the new president and her ideas about leadership at NAU. Lovett's Meet the Pres. episodes covered topics including the College of Health Professions, the Science and Mathematics Learning Center, the Office of Instructional Development and Faculty Growth, enhancing instruction with technology, the Native American Summer Arts Workshops, campus safety, Honors Week, and research experiences for undergraduate students at NAU. Unlike previous episodes of the show, not every episode during this time featured President Lovett; some were led by other faculty members or university personnel. In July 1995, the program was picked up for monthly broadcast by KUSK-TV in Prescott, Arizona, a network with statewide coverage. Baker and the President's Office decided to change the name of Meet the Pres. so that it was "more meaningful for a wider audience." The program was renamed NAU on the Move beginning August 18, 1995. (NAU's Public Affairs also issued a newsletter titled NAU on the Move in 1996 and 1997; it is not clear if this was related to the television program.) Episodes of NAU on the Move often featured President Lovett. They covered topics including Cline Library, NAU's new 3-year bachelor's degree program introduced in 1996, undergraduate education, NAU's outreach programs in Arizona, student athletes at NAU, an introductory biology course called Biology 101, the High Altitude Sports Training Complex, ecological research on the Colorado Plateau concerning willow trees and restoring riparian habitats, NAU's partnerships with Native American tribes and related projects such as the American Indian Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (AIRRTC), the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP), the Native American Academic Retention Program, and the Black Mesa Project, and the Flagstaff Festival of Science, among other topics. In 1996, Baker and the Office of the President decided to request proposals for a different producer for NAU on the Move, rather than NAU's Television Services. Later episodes were produced by Video Workshop in Tucson. The last episode of NAU on the Move was produced some time after March 1998. The reasons for its cessation are unknown. Information provided in this historical note is based on documentation of Meet the Pres. and NAU on the Move from the Clara M. Lovett Presidential Papers (NAU.ARC.R.G.1.13). Please contact the department to learn more. SCA staff (notably Jess Vogelsang, Nix Mendy, and Olivia "Liv" Hall) digitized moving images from the the Meet the Pres. and NAU on the Move video recordings, in conjunction with the NEH grant to address at-risk moving images. They discovered that 11 films (NAU.MI.1998.81.01.02 - NAU.MI.1998.81.01.012) do not have sound attached. Due to these condition issues, those films were not digitized and added to the Colorado Plateau Digital Collections. Researchers are advised to utilize digitized versions of the original films available online via the Colorado Plateau Digital Collections. Materials in the Meet the Pres. and NAU on the Move video recordings were donated to Cline Library on a rolling basis between 1992 and 1998. Processing Information
SCA staff inventoried VHS tapes in the Meet the Pres. and NAU on the Move video recordings as part of a larger inventory of moving image materials produced by NAU at some point prior to 2019. In 2023, Sam(antha) Meier assigned call numbers to the individual recordings and created a finding aid to describe the collection. Meier selected these VHS tapes for inclusion in a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant project in spring 2023 and created descriptive metadata for the items. Jess Vogelsang, Nix Mendy, and Olivia "Liv" Hall digitized the VHS tapes in spring and summer 2023. Mendy then added item-level links to the digitized moving images across the finding aid and updated descriptive notes. Container List
