Biographical Note
Richard "Dick" E. McCallum was born December 29, 1939 in Los Angeles, California. He spent much of his early life in the North Hollywood area, relocating to northern Arizona in 1957 to facilitate Colorado River rafting trips with Georgie White Clark. McCallum graduated from Arizona State College (now Northern Arizona University) in 1963 as a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. In 1967, he earned a Master of Arts degree in education, specializing in guidance and counseling. McCallum married his wife Susan (1947-) in the late 1960s and had one daughter, Jamie Price (née McCallum). From 1964 until 1984, McCallum was a teacher, guidance counselor, and Director of Alternative Education for the Flagstaff Unified School District.
McCallum founded Grand Canyon Expeditions, Inc. in 1965 with his business partner Ron Smith. In 1970, McCallum established a separate nonprofit organization, Grand Canyon Youth Expeditions, with Susan McCallum. Grand Canyon Youth Expeditions, also abbreviated at GCYE, was aimed at providing young people with Grand Canyon and Colorado River rafting experiences in collaboration with the Flagstaff Unified School District. In 1982, the couple restructured GCYE as a for-profit corporation, Expeditions, Inc.
McCallum also collaborated with Toys for Tots and the Havasupai Tribe on the Operation Supai toy and food distribution event, beginning in the late 1990s.
McCallum died in Flagstaff, Arizona on August 3, 2020.
Information in this biographical note was gathered from collection materials, donor information and an oral history interview with Dick McCallum from November 11, 1993 (NAU.OH.53.34).
Scope and Contents
Manuscript materials (NAU.MS.541) include documentation relating to the history of Grand Canyon Youth Expeditions and Expeditions, Inc, including correspondence, internal memoranda, and legal documentation related to the companies' operations as contract recreation concessioners at Grand Canyon National Park. Textual materials also include proposals for experiential education programs in collaboration with the Flagstaff Unified School District as well as newspaper clippings and promotional ephemera regarding Expeditions, Inc. and its Ventures program with the Museum of Northern Arizona.
Photographic materials (NAU.PH.2023.51) depict various river-rafting excursions facilitated by McCallum through Grand Canyon Youth Expeditions and Expeditions, Inc. on the Colorado and Little Colorado Rivers. Photographs also include images of McCallum and his daughter Jamie.
Moving images (NAU.MI.2023.51) depict rafting trips at the Grand Canyon and on the Biobio River in Chile, footage of Operation Supai activities in 1998, and documentaries about Georgie White Clark and the Grand Canyon.

| The Manuscripts group (NAU.MS.541) consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, informational pamphlets, and printed ephemera regarding the operation of Grand Canyon Youth Expeditions, Inc. and Expeditions, Inc. between 1961 and 2021. Materials contains financial statements, operational and hiring manuals, and legal documents for both corporations, as well as correspondence, proposals, and reports regarding the companies' concession contracts for Grand Canyon National Park from the National Park Service.
