Historical Note

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is a fraternity which believes in helping their fellow humans through acts of charity and friendship. The organization began in England sometime in the 1700s. By 1819, the brotherhood spread to America, where the first lodge was formed in New York. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows has claimed many prominent historical figures among their ranks, including Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, William McKinley, Warren Harding, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harry Truman. In 1851, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows became one of the first fraternities to allow women to their organization when the Degree of Rebekah was written into the bylaws of the Odd Fellows.

On April 26th, 1884, the Grand Lodge of Arizona was charted in what was then the territory of Arizona. Since then, eight lodges have been established in Arizona. Buckeye, Flagstaff, Globe, Kingman, Prescott Valley, Safford, Pinedale, Clay Springs (Show Low), and Tucson are all hosts to lodges. The Pinedale, Clay Springs, and Show Low branch are now all one lodge. Flagstaff's lodge is considered to be Lodge No. 11. However, not much is known to the public about how the Grand Lodge of Arizona's numbering systems were applied, as their most recent addition is Kingman Lodge No. 8.

There is not much information about the origins of Flagstaff Lodge No. 11. However, according to their records, it appears that they moved locations in 1892 and that their bylaws were approved by the Grand Lodge of Arizona in 1904. In the 1960s, they had many influential Flagstaff citizens as members, such as Charles Birge Wilson, Charlie Dryden, E.C. Mills, Frank M. Gold, John Faught, Orin C. Compton, Paul Russell, Platt Cline, and Shelby McCauley. Many of them were photographed by the Fronske Studio at a 1947 Odd Fellows convention which took place in Flagstaff, an image which is currently held by Special Collections and Archives in the Fronske Studio collection.
