Haldane "Buzz" Holmstrom, 1909-1946, was an early river runner. He was born in 1909 in a logging camp in the southern coastal forests of Oregon. He was raised in the area of Coquille, Oregon, the second of four children. He graduated from Coquille High School in 1928 and worked for many years in a local service station. In 1934 he began building boats and running whitewater rivers. In 1934, he ran the nearby Rogue River from Grants Pass to the ocean, solo. In 1935, he completed a second boat and ran the Rogue again with a friend. In 1936, he built a third boat and did a solo trip down the Salmon and Snake Rivers form Salmon, Idaho, to Lewiston, Idaho. He achieved national fame in 1937 when he built a fourth boat and ran it down the Green and Colorado Rivers, form Green River, Wyoming, to Boulder Dam - the first to do it alone. In 1938, he retraced the Green and Colorado trip accompanied by Amos Bur, who made a short film of the trip, Conquering the Colorado.
In 1939, Holmstrom was hired by Edith Clegg to take her across the USA by boat: up the Columbia and Snake Rivers, down the Yellowstone, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, up the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers, across the Erie Canal, and down the Hudson to New York.
Holmstrom later worked in Binham Mines near Salt Lake City (1939-1940); then for the Bureau of Reclamation on the Echo Park Dam project and survey of the Green River through Desolation and Gray Canyons (1940). He returned to Coquille for a year, working at a local lumber mill (1940-1941), then returned to the Bureau of Reclamation at the Bridge Canyon Dam Project in lower Grand Canyon (1940-1941).
In 1942, Holmstrom enlisted in the Navy and served as a carpenter's mate on PT boats, both in the South Pacific and Europe. He was discharged in October of 1945. In early 1946, he returned to the Bureau of Reclamation, this time in central California on the Friant Dam. In April he transferred to the Coast and Geodetic Survey to build and run boats for a survey of the Grand Ronde River. On the second day of the survey he was found dead, age 37, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Motives for the suicide are unclear.
This collection consists of letters and memorabilia pertaining to the river trips and work of Haldane "Buzz" Holmstrom. In October 2022, Brad Dimock donated a folder containing 21 letters addressed to Buzz. Dimock provided the following chain of custody information: "Buzz gave them all to Amos Burg when they were working together on the 1939 film, Conquering the Colorado Amos gave them to Cort Conley in the 1980s when Cort was visiting Amos and working on river history. Cort had planned to return them but Amos died as did his wife. No heirs. Cort gave them to me ten years ago. And I am returning them to Buzz's archive, which the family gave to Cline about twenty-five years ago at my behest."

NAU.PH.97.22.13.1: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. I left Coquille at 4 p.m. on October 8th with the boat on the trailer behind me. The boat is a 14-foot decked over rowboat made of a white cedar log which I found in the mountains above Powers. My chum and I split it up and hauled it down to the mill at Coquille, where it was sawed into boards. On the evening of October 11 I reached Salmon City, where the real adventure was to start. the road follows the Salmon down from its source. This picture was taken at an elevation of 8,752 feet, looking down into the birthplace of the Salmon River, with the Sawtooth Mountains in the background., Idaho. Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.2: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Salmon River doesn't look very big here, and the road is the worst I ever saw, but the scenery is wonderful, a miniature Grand Canyon of the Colorado. Gradually it is becoming quite a fair sized stream, carving deeply into the rocks., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.3: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Today, the 12th, I put the boat into the water at Salmon City bridge, where all the scow including the Geographic expedition, start. Harry Gulecke and a party left here yesterday. This is the first time my boat was ever in the water, but the only leak was an unplugged knot hole. I got away from Salmon City at 3 p.m. and camped ten miles down the river., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.4: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Past Middle Fork the river is much larger, waves rougher and rapids swifter. The road ends here at the Smith place. The night of the 14th I spent at a CCC camp nine miles below Pine Bar. There was just one rapid after another all the way down, small but some of them nasty. The boat handled well and I liked her better all the time., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.5: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. From Middle Fork, which you see in this picture, it is just one rapid after another with smooth water in between. There are several steep drops, rocky and rough, the mountains are practically straight up and down, and a strong wind blowing up-stream. In the rapids it blew water back in my face till I could not see. In the Long Tom rapid a wave smashed the back of the boat so hard it seemed as if it had struck a rock. When I left the CCC camp the lieutenant let all the men off work to watch me start., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.6: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. On the 14th I passed Pine Creek. I made it all right, but it was very close. Ihad to start at the left, cut across between two rocks, drop down next to a cliff at the right, then cut back to the left. After getting thro I walked back to Shoup and mailed some post cards. The river is full of rocks. Long Tom Creek is a nasty one. There is a lot of mining about Middle Fork. The prospectors have a way of their own of crossing the stream, and it is very efficient., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.7: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. The Avery Ranch is at Proctor Falls. They have a dredge, and are going to do big things. I went up to the house and had to eat with them. The falls are about four feet high where the river makes a sharp turn. By pulling hard across stream I avoided this fall and slid thro a crack in the ledge., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.8: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. A mile and a half below is Jack Cunningham's cabin. I went up to the house and had quite a visit with him. He is an all-round handy man. He has built a combination turning lathe and grindstone, and has a regular machine shop. I dropped down the river a ways to Jack Killam's cabin. He is a poet. He and his wife were mining by the river a way above their house, and they rode down with me over one rapid to the cabin. When we got to the cabin we saw a man walking up the other side of the river. It proved to be Hancock, captain of the Geographic expedition. His cabin is about ten miles below here and he had walked up and was going on out to build a scow and bring down his winter supplies. He is a quiet, lean, slow-spoken man of forty-five or so., Salmon River Valley (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.9: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1927. I took two views of the Cunningham cabin. Most of the way from Hancock's up here there is no trail, but he scrambles along the river part of the way and sometimes Hancock says my boat is the best one of that type that he ever saw. He wants to try it with sweeps, as they rig the scows. Jack Killam says he saw the biggest grizzley he ever laid eyes on, near here, so I will sleep with my hatcht for a pillow. Being a fishy sort of person it has occurred to me that I am what you might call bait for the Salmon, but whether or not the Salmon takes the bait remains to be seen., Salmon River Valley (Idaho). NAU.PH.97.22.13.10: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. I caught Captain Gulecke and his party at Cottonwood Creek today, the fifteenth. They are going to camp there for a few days. He has four fellows from Michigan with him. they gave me bear and deer meat. Gulecke is years old, and can't bend over very well, but Hancock says that right now he is the best river man on the river. He thought the boat was very good, and said I would probably get thro, tho I might swamp first., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.

NAU.PH.97.22.13.12: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Gulecke has been aground three or four times all ready on this trip. The scow doesn't draw much more water than my boat, and it is surprising how well it handles. I watched it go thro two riffles, and had the privilege of towing it out of an eddy. It is still over a hundred miles to Riggins, and I don't see how I shall get home by the 24th. There is one rapid after another, some of them pretty stiff, and the deck has been wet all forenoon. It isn't a matter of dodging the rocks, you have to go right over the top of them, where the water piles up on them., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.13: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. I am nearing Cottonwood Creek. Folks are honest in these here hills, apparently, for there is a bucket full of supplied hanging in a tree here, and a cave dug back in the mountain with two high powered rifles, telescope sights, high pressure cooker, and lots of provision, where any one could get it. Below the Cunningham place there have been many small creeks coming in, which build wide level deltas covered with trees and brush. It is an ideal country for game, as evidenced by tracks., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.14: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. This is Captain Gulecke at the sweep of his scow. The scow is 32 feet long. It is built of pine, double thickness. Something went wrong with the picture., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.15: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. At 12:45 I ran a rapid which I took to be Devil's Teeth. There was a delta above on the left and below on the right. This forces the river over against the left bank, and I have to cross in big waves. I drifted by the wreckage of some scow that didn't make it. In Rapid Butte, a little way below Devil's Teeth, the waves were big enuf to fairly stand her up on end., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.16: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Here is a picture of the scow that did not get thro. Jack Killam was telling me of an experience he had last winter. He hired some riverman to build him a scow and bring down his winter's provisions. Halfway down the scow was wrecked, so he lost the scow and all his provision as well., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.17: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. On the morning of the 16th I came to Barth Hot Springs, about a mile below my night's camp. I took a good wash in water too hot to hold my hand in. I can't drink it. It is some kind of mineral water., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.18: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. I also took a picture of this cabin across the river. No one was home., Salmon River Valley (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.19: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. About four in the afternoon I came to Salmon falls. It was a bad one. It is the wickedest looking place I ever saw. The toatal fall is probably not more than ten feet, but it comes in less than 100 feet. When I first looked at it I would have sworn it was impossible to run it, but by going clear against the rock on the left side and over the top of a rock on a pour, which looks like a knob of water on top of the rock, and from which the water runs three ways; if the boat didn't end over and I could get between the two rocks twelve or fifteen feet below, I could make it. I really did not think it possible, but it was either that or walk out and give up. So I took off my shirt, fastened on the life preserver, emptied my pockets, unloaded the boat, and had at her., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.20: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. There is an aproach of fifty feet of very swift water full of boils, very narrow, not enuf room to handle oars on account of rocks on both sides. I went thro there almost crossways, trying to line up witht the pour over which I must go exactly in the center with the last stroke of the left oar before it struck rock. I straightened her up and over she went exactly in the center, stood on end, the stern shot out of the water, and she leveled out taking on hardly any water at all, and I went between the rocks dead center and pulled ashore below. When I knew it was all over I started yelling, shouting and singing. Couldn't help it. Peculiar formation here. Apparently the granite on both sides slopes toward the gorge at an angle of 45' and very slick. There are two tall sharp bare peaks towering on the right side of the falls., Salmon River Valley (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 11x7.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.21: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. I am glad I was fortified by that bear meat. The next rapid after I wrote almost finished things. I made a careless start to pull to right of big rock and the cross-current was strong and rough. I managed to miss the big rock, but as I tried to slide by one heaped up wave. I dropped down below on solid rock near the stern. The hoat swung round. The oar bent and pulled out of the lock and floated away. The cockpit was half full of water and there I sat with the whole river falling on the rear deck. she swung round a time or two and then broke loose. All was clear below. I paddled down with one oar and picked up the other not broken. That white cedar is tough. after that I was more cautious and it was a good thing, for from there to Zanmuller's was the worst stretch I had seen yet. I was continually soaked and baling. I got to Zanmuller's at four. I been so busy I had forgotten to eat. This picture shows Campbell's Ferry with the Zanmuller ranch across the river. It is a nice ranch, with lots of horses, muchj range, large orchard, and they only have to walk seven miles to a road., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.22: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Sylvan Hart came across the river to where I was camped and invited me over to his place. He is a young fellow about thirty, medium size, good-looking, very independent, and has a college education. His house is most interesting, but the picture I took was a failure. He lives like Robinson Crusoe. He told me about some Indian paintings four or five miles up the river. We went up to see them. This picture shows the opening of the cave where they are., Salmon River Valley (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.23: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. This picture shows Sylvan Hart and some of the paintings. NAU.PH.97.22.13.24: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. This is a close view of the Indian writings. They are done with a sort of ochre, which has soaked into the rock more than inch deep. They have never been fully deciphered., Salmon River Valley (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.

NAU.PH.97.22.13.27: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Below Riggins the river is of a different nature. It is much swifter and larger waves by far. When the boat enters a rapid it is almost impossible to do anything with it. It almost stands on end. I nearly wrecked in Fiddle Creek. I slid over a big rock sideways and into a hole below. She tipped up on her side, the oar went under and broke off, and she righted herself and all was well. There have been a number of bad ones between Riggins and here, but I still think I can make it by being more careful., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.28: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. The river turns west again. This picture looks east at the last of three bad rapids, where the river starts thro this range of mountains. This has been a very good day. I made about fifty miles between 7:30 this morning and six this evening, with an hour out at Riggins., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.29: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. This is the 19th. I passed the bridge marking the place where the highway leaves the river, so am definitely on the last lap of the trip. The scenery is grand: something like the Grand Canyon. This shows the river looking down toward Pine Bar. It is so smooth it is bound to mean trouble ahead., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.30: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. This is Pine Bar. When I looked at it I would have quit for two cents, but did not dare weaken then. It was just one of those places where you either do or you don't. But I did, anyway. It is a sort of fall, but on the right the current comes in at an angle and runs under. You sort of go over the tongue of water with an air space under you., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.31: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Pine Bar is considered one of the worst on the river, so I am glad it is done. That first canyon beginning where the river turns west after leaving Riggins is a humdinger. You enter it abruptly and the first thing you know you are hemmed in by sheer rock walls and the roar of the rapids fills the canyon. That canyon gives you a greeting and parting to be remembered. Wish I could find another hot spring so I could wash., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.

NAU.PH.97.22.13.33: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. This shows the boat just below Snow Hole. I got thro o.k. It was the fastest water I ever saw. NAU.PH.97.22.13.34: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Here is Blue Canyon, which is just above the junction of the Salmon with the Snake. the rock is a beautiful blue color. NAU.PH.97.22.13.36: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. At the mouth of Salmon I overtook the two Finlanders, Og and Oke. They have a 27 foot scow with an engine, a very fine outfit. NAU.PH.97.22.13.37: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. Here is the junction of the Salmon and the Snake: Salmon on right and Snake on left. NAU.PH.97.22.13.38: Holmstrom, Buzz, 1936. I met this old prospector three miles below the Junction. He must be sixty or seventy years old. He had worked it down from China Bar with all his worldly possessions in it, lining and carrying it around bad places. I may be badly bitten by the river bug, but hope I never get bitten by the gold bug., Salmon River (Idaho). Black-and-White Photograph, 7x11.
NAU.PH.97.22.13.39: Photographer unknown, 1936. I got up and started at seven and at eight I landed in Lewiston and the trip was over.
