Historical Note
The Northern Arizona Normal School (NANS) opened on September 11, 1899 following
legislation to establish a Normal School in Flagstaff. Led by President and Professor A.N.
Taylor, NANS opened with 23 students and saw four women recieve lifetime teaching degrees in
the first graduating class of 1901.
In 1925, the Arizona State Legislature allowed the school was allowed to grant bachelor of
education degrees and changed its name to Northern Arizona State Teachers College (ASTC). By
1929, the school was known as the Arizona State Teachers College at Flagstaff.
The school once again changed its name to Arizona State College at Flagstaff in 1945 after
it expanded to offer science and arts degrees.
After further growth, the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) granted Arizona State College
university status as Northern Arizona University in 1966.
The History of Northern Arizona University collection (NAU.ARC.MS.1) contains eclectic
materials donated to Special Collections and Archives by NAU alumni, transferred to SCA by
staff at Arizona State University, and otherwise collected by SCA staff related to the
institutional history of Northern Arizona University (NAU) throughout its development.
Series 1: Northern Arizona Normal School (NANS) records (NAU.ARC.MS.1.01) features records
pertaining to the Northern Arizona Normal School and the Normal School Board of Trustees,
dating from 1899 to 1915. It includes correspondence, financial records, contracts,
clippings, and Board of Education minutes. Much of the correspondence concerns James
McClintock, who was a member of the Board of Directors of the Normal Schools in Arizona, and
A.N. Taylor, first President of the Northern Arizona Normal School. Series 1 also includes
diplomas from NANS students, materials from former NANS student J. Morris Richards, NANS
ephemera such as sports programs, ribbons regarding Arizona statehood, dance tickets, and
financial vouchers for NANS faculty and staff.
Series 2: Northern Arizona State Teachers College records (NAU.ARC.MS.1.02) includes
additional materials from J. Morris Richards and ephemera such as a 1926 banquest
program.
Series 3: Arizona State Teachers College at Flagstaff records (NAU.ARC.MS.1.03) includes
various account books, alumni bulletins, reports regarding Arizona State College, Flagstaff,
news clippings about ASTC, audit materials for ASTC (various years), student account and
departmental budget statements, ephemera related to homecoming, sample report cards, and
materials documenting the academic career of Emmett Thomas as ASTC between 1940-1941.
Series 4: Arizona State College at Flagstaff records (NAU.ARC.MS.1.04) include surveys and
reports, a poster for ASC's Annual All-Indian Show, homecoming and alumni materials, income
summaries, financial documentation for the bookstore and dining hall, and departmental
budget statements. It also includes documentation of the ASC Indian Show Committee and
Indian Show Scholarship Committee dating from 1954 to 1958, including correspondence from
President Lacey A. Eastburn and Agnes Allen. Committee members included John R. Salter,
Garland Downum, M. T. Lewellen, Melvin Hutchison, Ellery Gibson, Willie Coin, W. Tinsley, R.
Carrillo, Raymond Nakai, Lewis McDonald, George Kirk, Jimmey or Jimmie Kay, Wesley Bonito,
Milford Sanderson, Robbie D. George, Buster Madariaga, Gary Scott, Jane Masawiestewa, Elva
Gibson, Ellery Higson, Sherwood Numkena, and Willard Sakiewsta. Some materials pertain to
students who applied for the scholarship.
Series 5: Northern Arizona University records (NAU.ARC.MS.1.05) includes documentation of
NAU alumni and the Alumni Association's involvement in Homecoming between 1966-1977;
pamphlets, speeches, and other documentation of NAU's centennial celebration in 1999; and
documentation related to formal and informal reviews of NAU's undergraduate and graduate
programs, including reports to the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR), between 1983-1995.
Arrangement
Sean Evans and Sam(antha) Meier arranged the History of Northern Arizona University
collection (NAU.ARC.MS.1) into series based on the content of files:
The current arrangement of the History of Northern Arizona University collection
(NAU.ARC.MS.1) is based on the existing physical organization of materials found by Evans,
Meier, and Elizabeth Garcia in 2020.
At some point prior to the 2000s, SCA staff physically organized the materials in the
History of Northern Arizona University collection into groupings based on the name and
nature of the college at the time. For instance, staff grouped materials related to the
Northern Arizona Normal School records together, materials from Northern Arizona State
Teachers College together, and so on.
Staff then organized these materials into files chronologically and/or by record type.
No restrictions on use, except not available through interlibrary loan.
Conditions Governing Use
It is the responsibility of the user to obtain permission to publish from the owner of the
copyright (the institution, the creator of the record, the author or his/her transferees,
heirs, legates, or literary executors). The user agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the
Arizona Board of Regents for Northern Arizona University, its officers, employees, and
agents from and against all claims made by any person asserting that he or she is an owner
of copyright.

Acquisition Information
The bulk of the materials in Series 1: Northern Arizona Normal School (NANS) records
(NAU.ARC.MS.1.01) were transferred from President John W. Schwada of Arizona State
University to NAU President Lawrence J. Walkup in 1973. The NANS financial vouchers in
Series 1 were transferred from Alfred Thomas Jr. of Arizona State University to NAU
President Lawrence J. Walkup in 1972. SCA staff speculate that some of these materials may
have once been the property of Grady Gammage, but this has not been confirmed (June
2021).
Some materials in Series 1: Northern Arizona Normal School (NANS) records (NAU.ARC.MS.1.01)
and Series 2: Northern Arizona State Teachers College records (NAU.ARC.MS.2.02) appear to
have been donated by J. Morris Richards, a graduate of Northern Arizona Normal School.
Emmett Thomas's materials in Series 3 (NAU.ARC.MS.1.03) were donated to SCA by Thomas's
niece Kathe [last name unknown] via Brad Cole in 1996.
The provenance of other materials in the History of Northern Arizona University collection
is unknown as of June 2021.
Processing Information
Materials in Series 1: Northern Arizona Normal School (NANS) records (NAU.ARC.MS.1.01) were
inventoried circa 1973-1975. SCA staff, notably Danielle Dlugajczyk, re-organized certain files circa 2014.
In February and March 2021, Elizabeth Garcia created an Encoded Archival Description (EAD)
finding aid for the Northern Arizona Normal School records now found in Series 1
(NAU.ARC.MS.1.01).
In June 2021, Samantha Meier did minor reprocessing (foldering and adding folder titles and
numbers for loose materials) for materials found in Series 2, Series 3, and Series 4
(NAU.ARC.MS.1.02, NAU.ARC.MS.1.03, NAU.ARC.MS.1.04), in addition to adding those materials
to the finding aid in the order in which they were found. Meier added Series 5 to the
finding aid in September 2021.
Series 1: Northern Arizona Normal School records features records pertaining to the
Northern Arizona Normal School and the Normal School Board of Trustees, dating from 1899
to 1915. It includes correspondence, financial records, contracts, clippings, and Board
of Education minutes. Much of the correspondence concerns James McClintock, who was a
member of the Board of Directors of the Normal Schools in Arizona, and A.N. Taylor,
first President of the Northern Arizona Normal School. Series 1 also includes diplomas
from NANS students, materials from former NANS student J. Morris Richards, NANS ephemera
such as sports programs, ribbons regarding Arizona statehood, dance tickets, and
financial vouchers for NANS faculty and staff.
Arrangement
SCA staff arranged certain files within the Northern Arizona Normal School records chronologically by month
and year, often by record type. Certain files were further created to indicate Board of Education
materials. Materials donated to SCA by former students or their heirs were labeled with that student's name.
Processing Information
The Northern Arizona Normal School records were inventoried circa 1973-1975. SCA staff, notably Danielle Dlugajczyk,
re-organized certain files circa 2014. In June 2021, Samantha Meier added the financial vouchers as well as other materials to Series 1.
