Biographical NoteWilliam B. Hargleroad was born in 1895 and hailed from Holstein, Nebraska. After receiving formal education at Holstein and Hastings (Nebraska) and the School of Military Aeronautics at Ohio State University, he became an officer in the Aviation Section Signal Reserve Corps in World War I. After the war, he became involved in the banking and real estate industries. He was chief appraiser and examiner for the Regional Agriculture Credit Corporation in 1931, then manager of the mortgage loan department of the Service Life Insurance Company from 1931-1954. After World War II, Hargleroad continued his professional passion for real estate. He began a series of real estate developments in Omaha and became the head of several real estate investment companies. He was president of the Real Estate Association in 1956; in 1963 he was named Nebraska Realtor of the Year. With his wife Marguerite, he had four children. He passed away on April 9, 1966 at the age of 70. Scope and ContentFootage consists of a comprehensive (73 minute) overview of Hargleroad's experiences as a passenger on the July 1949 Nevills Expedition. Boatmen for that trip included Jim Rigg, Norm Nevills, Frank Wright, and Pat Reilly. Passengers included Frank "fisheyes" E. Masland Jr., Jack Painter, Robert "Bob" Kuhne (Jack and Bob were cameramen from 20th Century Fox), Nancy Streator, Edwin D. McKee, Molly Maley, Dr. Josiah Eisaman [Eiseman], Anne Eisaman [Eiseman], Trois and Bud Anspach, Mary Ogden Abbott, Helen Kendall, and Joan Nevills. Trois, Bud, Mary, Helen, and Joan are not depicted in the footage as they joined the trip at Phantom Ranch - where William departed. Beginning with an aerial tour of Lees Ferry and the surrounding region, Hargleroad captures his meeting with the crew and other passengers as they prepare to depart. Footage taken for the subsequent six days focuses on time spent on the river and side trips until the final mule ride out of the canyon. One significant trip that is captured is to the site of Bert Loper's boat, which had capsized (and taken Bert's life) only six days earlier. ArrangementRestrictionsConditions Governing Access
