Biographical Note
Joseph "Joe" Glenn Hall was born on July 22, 1923 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Rufus B. Hall and
Frances Ebersole Hall. He had one brother, William B. (Bill) Hall, and one sister, Margaret
Chandler Hall. After graduating from Walnut Hills High in Cincinnati in 1941, Hall attended
Princeton for two years, followed by his brother William B. Hall ('47). While at Princeton,
Hall joined Dial Lodge and was on the freshman cross-country team. In 1943, he joined the
United States Army, serving as an EMT with the Army Medical Corps. Hall returned to Princeton
in 1946 after the end of World War II, completing a degree in biology in 1948. He then
earned a Master's degree in biology from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1950.
Hall met his future wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Allen, while both were studying at U.C.
Boulder. (Allen was born August 22, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri.) They married in 1950. The
Halls had four daughters: Sally (born in 1952), Connie (born in 1954), Peggy (born in 1959),
and Lisa (born in 1961). They were active members of the Nature Conservancy and the Sierra
Club.
Around 1950, Joe Hall spent a summer working as a park ranger at the South Rim of the
Grand Canyon, where he met the naturalist Myron Sutton. After completing their respective
degrees at U.C. Boulder, the Halls moved to Berkeley, California. Joe Hall completed his
Ph.D. in wildlife management from the University of California, Berkeley in 1956, while
Betty pursued a Ph.D. in botany. After obtaining his degree, Joe Hall taught zoology for a
year at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Between 1957 and 1982, he taught zoology
and biology at San Francisco State University. During his career, he was elected a Fellow of
the California Academy of Sciences in addition to winning awards for his wildlife
photography.
Hall's work as a naturalist began with his dissertation research, which concerned beavers
in northern Nevada, near Truckee. In 1960, he started his research on the Kaibab squirrel on
the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This study continued until 1974. Hall also studied river
otters in Grand Teton National Park in later years.
In 1964, Hall joined in on a Colorado River trip with Martin Litton, P.T. Reilly,
François Leydet, and Phillip Hyde. Leydet published a book based on the trip, Time and the River Flowing: Grand Canyon, with the support of the
Sierra Club. The book featured wildlife photographs taken by Hall.
Joe Hall retired from teaching in 1983, and he and Betty moved to Grand Junction, Colorado.
There, Hall wrote the children's book Linnea: portrait of a Kaibab
squirrel, with sketches of other wildlife on the North Rim of Grand Canyon (1998),
illustrated by his daughter, Lisa Kearsley.
Joseph G. Hall died on May 17, 2005 at his home in Grand Junction, at the age of 81.
Information in this biographical history note is based upon
donor-supplied information as well as a 2005 memorial in the Princeton Alumni Weekly
titled Memorial Joseph Glenn Hall '45, an
obituary in Grand Canyon River Guides' Boatmens Quarterly written by Richard Quartaroli,
and an obituary in the National Park Service
newsletter Arrowhead (Vol. 13, No. 2).
Scope and Content
The Joseph G. Hall collection encompasses the field notes, report, photographs, and movies
created by Hall as he studied the Kaibab squirrel and the Grand Canyon between 1960 and
1974.
Manuscript materials (NAU.MS.341) include Hall's journals and field notes and cover the
period of his research from 1960 to 1974.
Photographs (NAU.PH.2002.8) include 237 slides documenting a 1964 Glen Canyon / Colorado
River trip from Lees Ferry to Lake Mead, as well as 140 slides documenting a 1962 trip to
the Grand Canyon, and 14 black-and-white negatives and 17 black-and-white prints also taken during the 1964 Grand Canyon trip.
Moving images (NAU.MI.2002.8) document Hall's hike to Shiva Temple in 1963 and a 1969 film
about the Kaibab squirrel. The Kaibab squirrel film was produced by William B. Hall, Joe Hall's brother.
Arrangement
Bee Valvo organized materials in the Joseph G. Hall collection into 4 format-based series
in 2003. Samantha Meier updated the arrangement of materials in 2021 to reflect their
current physical organization.
Due to a lack of required playback equipment and the fragility of the materials in
question, original 8mm and 16mm films in the moving images portion of the Joseph G. Hall
collection (NAU.MI.2002.8) are unavailable for access and use in the Miriam Lemont Reading
Room.
Researchers are advised to utilize digitized versions of the original films available
online via the Colorado Plateau Digital Collections. Please see the Digital Material
