Frank Medina's Boy's Boxing Team, March 2,
1940 (21 photographs, including 5 picture postcards, 12 negatives,
4 prints)
Scope and Contents
This collection contains 17 unique photographs of the members of Frank
Medina's elementary school-aged boys boxing team, known as the "Pugs," taken
on March 2, 1940. These photographs were likely taken in connection to four
"exhibition bouts" the Pugs participated in before a Lumberjack Boxing Club
match against the Phoenix Optimist club boxers at Northern Arizona
University (then Arizona State Teachers College) in May of 1940.
There are multiple copies of NAU.PH.119.1 (3 copies), NAU.PH.119.7 (2
copies), and NAU.PH.119.8 (2 copies).
Processing Information
The photographs in this group were titled "Frank Madino's Boys Boxing Team"
by Special Collections and Archives staff during initial processing.
In December of 2020, Sean Evans discovered that the name given for the boxing
coach was likely misspelled during initial processing. The coach is
identified as "Frank Medina" in the May 21, 1940 issue of The Pine. Samantha
Meier and Sean Evans corrected this error at that time.
