Historical Note

The Friends of Georgie White Clark collection is a companion resource to the Georgie White Clark collection (NAU.MS.270; NAU.PH.91.13; NAU.OH.91.47). Materials included in the Georgie White Clark collection were first acquired by Special Collections and Archives in 1991. After Clark's death in 1992, Rosalyn Jirge collaborated with Special Collections and Archives staff Karen Underhill and Diane Grua to source additional materials from fellow members of Georgie's Royal River Rats. These materials were originally integrated into the Georgie White Clark collection. Special Collections and Archives staff including Sam Meier and Erin Carter reprocessed the materials to create the Friends of Georgie White Clark collection in 2024 in order to better represent the provenance of specific materials.

Dubbed "Woman of the River," Clark's relationship with the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River spanned decades, from first sight in 1944 to her last river run in 1991. The materials that make up the Friends of Georgie White Clark collection were donated by Clark's boatmen, employees, passengers, and friends. They document commercial river rafting on the Colorado River, and the functions and activities of Georgie's Royal River Rats.

The donors represented in the collection are Delphine Gallagher, Fred Darvill, Helen Strzelecki and John Lonk, Lois Englebright, Ludwig Fromme, Marion and Richard Smith, Phyllis Wilken, Richard Chambers, Robert Atherton, Robert and Jean Baer, Ron Hancock, Rosalyn Jirge, Sylvia Tone, and Tom Vail.

Scope and Contents

The Friends of Georgie White Clark collection is composed of manuscript, photographic, 2-dimensional print, and 3-dimensional artifact materials. Textual materials include correspondence, trip logs and journals, clippings and publications, ephemera, vital documents and statistics, memos, promotional materials, transcripts from interviews conducted by Rosalyn Jirge, and genealogical research. Photographic materials include negatives, slides, and prints from river trips spanning the 1950s to 1990s, as well as photo albums and scrapbooks containing additional photographic and print materials. 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional items include Georgie's Royal River Rats t-shirts and hat, sketches, large promotional materials, and a banner.

The Friends of Georgie White Clark collection is arranged in series by donor or donor relation, as listed below. Sub-series are used throughout to further describe the materials from each donor, particularly in series with greater material volume.

	Biographical Note
	Delphine Gallagher (nee Mohrline) was born March 11, 1926 in York, Pennsylvania. She first heard of Georgie White Clark, the "Woman of the River," while hiking the Grand Canyon in 1956. In 1962, Gallagher went on her first river trip with Clark where she met her husband, Jim Gallagher. After completing subsequent trips from 1963 on, Gallagher was officially initiated as a Royal River Rat in 1965.
	In 2000, Special Collections and Archives published an online exhibition titled "The Perils of Delphine" about Gallagher's time on the river with Clark.
	Biographical information was gathered from the donor and "The Perils of Delphine."

	Scope and Contents
	The Delphine Gallagher series consists of trip logs, trip narration, descriptions for slides featured in the Photographs sub-series, publications, and correspondence with Rosalyn Jirge after Clark's death in 1992. It also includes negatives and slides from Gallagher's many trips, as well as photographic prints of her initiation into Georgie's Royal River Rats.

	Custodial History
	The Miscellaneous series contains manuscript materials of uncertain provenance. Many of the items included in this series were originally processed into the Georgie White Clark collection and removed in 2024 to be added to the Friends of Georgie White Clark collection.

	Immediate Source of Acquisition
	While the materials are clearly related to Georgie White Clark, their donor(s) are difficult to determine. Because of the close collaboration between Special Collections and Archives and Rosalyn Jirge throughout the collecting process, it is presumed that the acquisition of these materials was facilitated by Jirge.

			Biographical Note
			Harry Aleson (1899-1972) was a river runner who who started Western River Tours with silent partner Charles Larabee in 1949. He went on multiple river trips with Clark in the 1940s.
			Biographical information was gathered from the Harry Aleson papers, 1940-1986.

			This file contains photo copies of Aleson's trip journal from 1946, trip log from 1948, and correspondence with Georgie White Clark.

	Biographical Note
	Rosalyn J. Jirge was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1940 and raised in Los Angeles, California. Jirge's first introduction to Georgie White Clark was on a 1956 television program called "Woman of the Rivers," which she saw as a teenager. She took her first trip through the Grand Canyon with Clark in June of 1977. After helping Clark at the annual San Francisco Sports and Boat Show, Jirge was offered a "helper" position with Georgie's Royal River Rats, and consequently participated in multiple Grand Canyon runs a year through 1990 as a swamper. Clark made her last river run in September of 1991, and died on May 12, 1992 of cancer. After Clark's death, Jirge began reaching out to fellow Royal River Rats for collection materials, which ultimately landed in Special Collections and Archives in collaboration with Karen Underhill and Diane Grua. She also conducted genealogical research on Clark and her family, the results of which are included in this series.
	Biographical information was gathered from the donor, as well as the 2015 Whale Foundation calendar.

	Scope and Contents
	The Rosalyn Jirge series includes genealogical research on Georgie White Clark and her family, computer disks containing digital copies of interviews conducted by Jirge, journals, trip logs and schedules, correspondence with community members such as Clark, L.C.B. McCullough, and Dock Marston, memos and ephemera from Georgie's Royal River Rats, interview transcripts, and photographs.
