Biographical/Historical Note

Established in 1919, the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, succeeded the Flagstaff Board of Trade. The Board of Trade began in 1891 to promote commercial opportunities in the Flagstaff region. Founders of this original organization were W.L. Van Horn, Dr. D.J. Brannen, and D.M. Riordan. By 1919, Flagstaff citizens George Herrington and Earl Slipher felt that the organization should be reorganized as the Chamber of Commerce. This group still exists today.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a wide variety of promotional material about tourism and about education and industry in Northern Arizona specifically and in the southwest generally. Subgroup 1 contains material pertaining to the workings of the organization. Of interest here are the minutes and papers from numerous committees who had assignments related to economic development in the region. Topics include Grand Canyon, Native Americans, Glend Canyon Dam etc.

The second subgroup contains material of a published nature. Probably the most significant and interesting items in this section are the numerous brochures detailing the natural wonders of the Northern Arizona. A nice collection of material documenting the educational institutions of the region - Northern Arizona University, and Prescott College, as well as information about the numerous observatories in the area.

The photograph collection contains photographs of miscellaneous scenery and canyons throughout northern Arizona, as well as photographs of the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce.
