Biographical Note

Robert C. Euler was born on August 8, 1924 in New York, New York. Euler studied economics at Arizona State College (now Northern Arizona University) and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1947 and 1948 respectively. He received his Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico in Anthropology in 1958.

Prior to completing his education, Euler served in the Marine Corps from 1942-1946 and 1950. During his service, he was wounded in the shoulder at Iwo Jima. He was eventually discharged with rank of Captain.

Euler became Curator of Anthropology at the Museum of Northern Arizona from 1952-1956. Subsequent to his tenure as curator, Euler continued to be involved with the Museum throughout his life, in the capacities of a board member, research fellow, and consultant.

Following his curatorial position with the Museum of Northern Arizona, Euler taught anthropology at several institutions of higher education, including Northern Arizona University (1952-1964), the University of Utah (1964-1966), Prescott College (1966-1973), Fort Lewis College (1973-1974), Southern Illinois University (1975-1983), Yavapai College (1977-1978) and Arizona State University (1983-1990?). In addition to these positions, Euler was visiting lecturer or professor at several other institutions.

Euler was deeply involved with the establishment and administration of Prescott College. He was a charter faculty member of the Center for Anthropological Studies as well as being the chairman of the Center from 1964-1973. Euler also served as president of the College from 1972-1973.

From 1974-1984, Euler served as the Anthropologist for the National Parks Services, stationed at the Grand Canyon National Park. In this capacity, he was responsible for the administration of the anthropological and cultural resource management program. During this time, he was also instrumental in bridging relationships between the Park Services and neighboring Native American tribes.

Euler died on January 13, 2002 in Prescott, Arizona.

Scope and Content

The Robert Euler Collection documents Euler's research and activities as an anthropologist and scholar of southwest indigenous peoples as well as an educator and administrator of institutions of higher education, museums and the National Park Service. The collection contains correspondence, research notes, field notes, journals, photographic material, draft writings, articles, and reports. The strength of the collection resides in the research notes, photographic materials, and field notes related to the anthropological and ethnographic data pertaining to the Native American tribes of the Colorado Plateau.

The collection is arranged in two portions: Manuscripts and Photographs. Within Manuscripts, there are 3 subseries: Professional Research and Publications, [1630-1999]; Personal, [1965-2001]; and Maps, [1947-1980]. Photographs is divided into 3 series: Anthropology, [1853-1999]; Natural Sciences, [1900-1998]; and Personal, [1909-1993]. Each series may be further broken down into sub-subseries as appropriate. The inclusive dates of the collection are [1630-2001]; however, the bulk of the collection dates from 1955-2000.

NAU.PH.2002.17: Photographs, 1853-1999, 8,361 images (prints, photocopies, negatives, and slides)
This photograph collection consists of 8,361 images of varying formats, documenting the research, surveys and excavations performed on the Colorado Plateau by Robert Euler and his colleagues. This series focuses primarily on anthropological research done for, on, or in cooperation with Native American tribes of the American Southwest and the Great Basin, but also includes research on the natural environment such as botany, meteorology, and geology. Many of these photographs were captured during his helicopter surveys and Grand Canyon River trips primarily between 1965 and 1972.
A number of images relate to scenic views of the Grand Canyon and the wider Southwest. The series also includes images of Native American tribes of North America beyond the Southwest, as well as research done outside the Unites States. The last series pertains to Robert Euler's personal life, documenting his family vacations, friends and colleagues, and his travels throughout the Americas and overseas.

NAU.PH.2002.17.1: Anthropology, 1853-1999, 4,947 images (prints, photocopies, negatives, and slides)
This series consists of 4,947 images of varying formats and is divided into two subseries: Communities and General Archaeology. The former is further organized alphabetically by tribal affiliation. The images within this series primarily document various aspects of life among indigenous communities in the American Southwest and outlying regions, but also include archaeological projects without cultural affiliations. Euler created much of this material during his work for the National Park Service, during his teaching career, and during his time as a consulting anthropologist to a number of Southwestern tribes.
NAU.PH.2002.17.1.1: Communities, 1853-1999, 4,842 images (prints, photocopies, negatives, and slides)
This subseries is arranged alphabetically by tribe. Some subseries have only a few images, while others are quite large, which indicates Euler's primary research interests. These sub-subseries relate to both contemporary and ancestral communities, and cover such subjects as reservation life, agriculture, historic photographs, artifacts, ruins and archaeological sites, and individuals.
