Biographical Note

William T. Beaver (1925-2009) was a trader near the Navajo Reservation in the mid to late twentieth century. He operated the Sacred Mountain Trading Post for several years, and is widely credited with encouraging Navajo potters to bring their work into the mainstream.

Scope and Content

This collection contains 90 photographic images (prints, negatives) from 2000-2001 taken by Bill Beaver and Art Lee of Art Lee Enterprises of the remnants from several trading posts on the Navajo Reservation, including Castle Butte Trading Post, Dilkon Trading Post, Tees Toh Trading Post, Borderland Trading Post, Sunrise Trading Post, Black Mountain Trading Post, Low Mountain Trading Post, Salina Trading Post, Smoke Signal Trading Post, and Bita Hochee Trading Post. Beaver communicated with Lee over a period of time during these visits and included their correspondence as part of the collection. He also took many notes about the trading posts and traders along the way; these are included in the collection. Also included is one VHS cassette of a tour of the Hopi Salt Trail displaying pictographs along the trail, taken in 2005.
