Biographical NotePlatt Herrick Cline (1911-2001) was born to Gilbert and Jessie Hatfield Baker Cline in Mancos, Colorado, spending his formative years in Mancos. Cline graduated from Mancos High School and New Mexico Military Institute in 1930, attending the University of Colorado at Boulder for one year. Platt Cline made his first visit to Flagstaff in 1932, falling in love with the community. Cline’s journalism career started as a reporter for The Mancos Times-Tribune, going on to work for the Norwood Post-Independent, as an Associated Press correspondent, the Coconino Sun, the Winslow Mail, and the Holbrook Tribune-News. In 1936 Cline married Barbara Decker Cline; they had one son (Robert), two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. In 1938 Platt and Barbara moved to Flagstaff permanently, with Platt going to work for the Arizona Daily Sun. Platt worked as advertising manager, reporter, becoming the editor in 1946. Cline would eventually go on to become the publisher and president of the publication. Cline was a tireless advocate for the community of Flagstaff focusing on better relations with Native Americans, better housing, and with significant contributions to assisting with the transition of Arizona State Teachers College to becoming Northern Arizona University. Cline also authored several books regarding the history of Flagstaff, including: They came to the mountain : the story of Flagstaff's beginnings in 1976, Mountain campus : the story of Northern Arizona University in 1983, and Mountain town: Flagstaff's first century in 1994. Scope and ContentThis collection contains correspondence, photographic material, photocopies of legal documents and charts, and audio recordings pertaining to Cline’s research for his book about the history of Flagstaff and the Hopi language.
