Biographical Note

Marc Gaede grew up in Flagstaff and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University, and a Master of Fine Arts in photography from Art Center College of Design. He joined the U.S. Marines and graduated in 1966 from the U.S. Army's combat photographic school in Ft. Monmouth, N.J., and later served as a Marine Corps photographer at Camp Pendleton, CA, as well as briefly on the amphibious assault carrier USS Iwo Jima.

After his military career, Gaede worked as curator of photography at the Museum of Northern Arizona for eight years. His interest in photography allowed him to later become an assistant to Ansel Adams in 1977, and was photographer-in-residence at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona in 1978-79. His photographs of Southwest arts and crafts, landscapes, and Indian ruins have been included in numerous books and articles. He and his wife, Marnie have also published numerous books on Native Americans of the Southwest and archeology. Gaede has held many titles over the years, including anthropologist, ecologist, and photographer. He comes from a long line of environmental activists; his grandfather is considered the primary founder of Olympic National Park. Gaede was once known as the “Arizona Phantom” because of the direct action and ecological sabotage he carried out against environmentally damaging companies and individuals. Gaede currently serves as director of governmental affairs for the National Association of Wheat Growers, and is a member of the board of advisors of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a non-profit, marine conservation organization.

Gaede has been an instructor of photography, environmental issues, and Physical Anthropology in the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California since 1988.
