Biographical Note

William W. Sage (b. 1946 Denver, CO) has been involved in international humanitarian aid for over forty years. He joined the International Voluntary Services team in Laos in 1969 and later served as a Community Development Area Adviser with the United States Agency for International Development in the southern and later northwestern regions of Laos until 1975. In 1977 he served four years as the Director of the Joint Voluntary Agency (JVA) in Bangkok, Thailand during which time 200,000 refugees from Indochina were processed for resettlement to the U.S.

While in Laos and Thailand, he collected both published and unpublished reports, papers, books and documents related to topics on Laos which in 1986 became the subject matter of his book Laos: A Bibliography published by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore.

Mr. Sage has continued his involvement in refugee relief work with non-profit humanitarian aid agencies. International assignments have taken him to Thailand, India, most regions of Africa, the Balkans, and most recently the Middle East. In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, he coordinated several emergency response programs in NYC and in 2004 in the Gulf Coast area following Hurricane Katrina and most recently in response to the earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

Mr. Sage earned his B.A. in Political Science from Arizona State University in 1968. At ASU he was active in student government and organizer of student government leader exchanges between ASU and University of Sonora, Mexico. Returning from a summer in Eastern Europe in 1967, he promoted the opportunity for ASU students to spend a summer abroad with The Experiment in International Living. He was Adjunct Professor in the former Program for Southeast Asian Studies from 1998 to 2005 and is currently Vice-Chair of the Friends of Laos Studies at ASU which fosters bridge-building activities between ASU and the National University of Laos. Since 2004, he has promoted the opportunity for ASU undergraduate students to spend part of their summer break in Laos.

In 2001, Mr. Sage was awarded an ASU Alumni Achievement Award for his outstanding professional achievements. Mr. Sage presently lives in New York City and serves on several boards and committees of non-profit organizations.
