Historical Note
The National Association for Ethnic Studies was initially proposed during a conversation among scholars after the Milwaukee Conference of African Historians in the spring of 1972. These scholars had several concerns about ethnic studies in the Midwest, including lack of communication among educators teaching and/or researching "minority studies," conferences limited to individual ethnic groups or specific disciplinary interests, the desire for conferences that would assist educators in developing ethnic studies programs and courses, and lack of ability to address issues at multiple educational levels. An ad hoc steering committee was elected at the second conference in 1974 and first met in April of 1975, where the organization was formally named "The National Association of Interdisciplinary Studies for Native Americans, Black, Chicano, Puerto Rican, and Asian Americans." The name was shortened to "National Association for Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies" in 1976 and again to "National Association for Ethnic Studies" in 1985. The Association supported student activism on college and university campuses intended to increase the number of minority students and teachers and to promote the development of curricula responsive to the needs of communities of color. It also worked to foster interdisciplinary discussion about ethnicity.
NAIES began publishing a newsletter in the fall of 1975 in order to broadly disseminate ideas generated at annual conferences. This newsletter was joined by Explorations in Ethnic Studies in January of 1978 and Explorations in Sights and Sounds, which featured reviews of books and media, in Spring of 1981. Both Explorations in Ethnic Studies and Explorations in Sights and Sounds ceased publication in the summer of 1995 and were succeeded by The Ethnic Studies Review.
Scope and Content Note
The National Association for Ethnic Studies (NAES) Records house meeting minutes, agendas, reports, conference programs, financial information, correspondence, article drafts and reviews, and other materials documenting the Association's operations and activities from 1973 to 2003. Among the subjects represented are Executive Committee meetings, conferences and conference planning, reports from the Association's officers, financial information, membership drives and records, policy statements, correspondence, and creating and distributing various publications.
Series I: Administrative Records consists primarily of meeting minutes, agendas, notes, reports, and other materials documenting NAES Executive Council meetings between 1975 and 2000. Subjects discussed at these meetings include national and regional conference planning, officers' reports, membership and financial information, officer elections, the NAES textbook evaluation program, and concerns regarding bias in academic programs and society. Also included are detailed reports documenting the organization's membership and finances, information regarding NAES's dissolution and reincorporation in 1985, policy statements, correspondence, and information about awards granted by the organization.
Series II: Conferences includes programs, draft and final conference papers, photographs, correspondence, and other materials showing conferences organized by NAES between 1973 and 1998. Most of the conferences represented are annual gatherings, but some regional conferences held around the United States are also present. Series III: Publications houses submitted papers, reviewers' comments, correspondence, and other materials documenting the creation and publication of Explorations in Ethnic Studies,Ethnic Studies Review, Explorations in Sights and Sounds, and the organization's newsletter. Peer reviewers' names have been redacted unless the reviewer wrote a critique of the reviewed piece that was subsequently published.
