Biographical Note

George Gustave Wald was born to Gustav and Elizabeth F. (Lautz) Wald in Boston, Massachusetts on April 28, 1883. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before moving west, arriving in Utah as a sampler for the Boston Copper Company sometime before 1906. He settled in the Arizona Territory in about 1910 and began working as a mining engineer in eastern Arizona, most likely with Ray Consolidated. He later worked with the Magma Mine in Chloride, Arizona. Wald married Elizabeth Percy Carpenter in Phoenix, Arizona on December 21, 1916 and the couple had three sons: George Gustave Jr. (1917-1982), Edwin Prescott (1920-2014), and Karl Alden (1923-). The family permanently relocated to Alhambra, California in 1925. George Wald died of heart disease in Chloride, Arizona on November 31, 1939.

Edwin Wald's description of this image reads "On the left, the first person was Mill Superintendent in late 1939. The 3rd person is my dad George G. Wald, mine superintendent. The 5th person is A. C. Dundas, mill superintendent, his wife at his right. Just above him my face appears (I was standing on a running board). Harold Carpenter, standing on the car radiator had told me to get in the picture. Farther to the right, the fellow holding a young boy is George Neil. Beyond him, the fellow holding his right shoulder down and the tall fellow next to him were two of the best miners, the lady appearing just above his lower right shoulder is May Carpenter. Further on, the fellow with suspenders was the Hoist Operator."
