Administrative Note
The 1864 Howell Code created the Treasurer’s Office. The county elected or appointed the Treasurer for a two-year term. The Treasurer kept a fair and accurate account of all the monies received for licenses or permits and reported their amounts to the Board of Supervisors and the Territorial Treasurer. In 1885, the Territorial Legislature transferred the responsibility of tax collection to the Treasurer’s Office. Under the Arizona Constitution, the County Treasurer became an elected official.
