The boundary was then extended eastward to the San Carlos River by public petition in 1889. The original county seat was in the mining community of Globe City, now Globe, Arizona. Under the 1864 Howell Code, each county elected two Coroners to serve two-year terms. If the Coroner position was vacant, a Justice of the Peace served as Coroner. The Coroner investigated unnatural deaths and convened juries to inquire into suspicious deaths. The Coroner also served as Sheriff if that office was vacant. The 1913 Civil Code established the County Coroner’s Office and made them Justices of the Peace for their precincts, therefore Coroner’s records are sometimes found with Justice Court records. In 1975, the County Medical Examiner replaced the County Coroner’s Office Scope and ContentThe collection consists of 1 box, 3 volumes, and 9 reels of microfilm of coroner’s inquests.
