Abstract: | This collection contains administrative materials on the founding of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Studies at the University of Arizona beginning in 1993. The collection also includes the events and programming that the Committee for Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Studies put on from 1993 through 2015. In 2007, the Committee was formally re-established as the Institute for LGBT Studies, and in 2023 was re-established as the UA LGBTQ+ Institute. This collection is part of the Arizona Queer Archives (AQA), a community focused archive through the Institute for LGBT Studies at the University of Arizona. It was transferred to Special Collections in 2020. |

This collection was donated by Jamie A. Lee and contains information on the founding of the LGBTQ+ Institute, formerly known as first the Committee for Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Studies, and later the Institute for LGBT Studies. The Committee was founded by Miranda Joseph, a former University of Arizona professor, and Beverly Seckinger, a current University of Arizona professor. The Committee for L/G/B Studies was aimed at establishing the University of Arizona's first department focused on LGBT issues. The founders of the Committee organized campus-wide to establish the department, studying departments that existed at other universities, and working with faculty and staff to garner support.
This collection includes grant applications, meeting notes and correspondences, and official notes and records from the founding of what is now the Institute for LGBT Studies. Also included are administrative and planning records from significant events sponsored by or hosted by LGB Studies on campus and in Tucson, including Lesbian Looks, the Mexican Masculinities Conference, Sex & Scholarship Symposium, and the Sex, Race & Globalization Series. This collection is part of the Arizona Queer Archives (AQA), a community focused archive through the Institute for LGBT Studies at the University of Arizona. It was transferred to Special Collections in 2020.
