Biographical Note

The University of Arizona College of Medicine admitted its first class in the fall of 1967. The following year Richard R. Wiley PhD was hired to establish a new unit, independent of the existing teaching departments, whose general objective was broadening the horizons of faculty and students in the area of human values and social issues. The unit was called the Division of Social Perspectives in Medicine and played an important role in the College of Medicine's educational mission for over 30 years.

Scope and Content Note

The collection extensively documents the history of the Division of Social Perspectives in Medicine history, especially through the 1970s and 1980s, and provides detailed insight into this early, non-traditional component of the University of Arizona's medical school curriculum.
