Biographical Note

The Arizona Architectural Archives was established in 1976 at the College of Architecture Library at the University of Arizona to preserve and make available documentation about prominent architects, builders, and architecturally significant structures in Arizona. After the closure of the College of Architecture Library circa the mid-2000s, collections were dispersed to several locations including the University of Arizona Libraries and the Arizona Historical Society. The bulk of the holdings transferred to UA Libraries Special Collections consists of professional papers, project, and office records related to significant architects, architectural practices, and builders active in Arizona in the 20th century.

Scope and Content Note

The Arizona Architectural Archives records collection includes organizational and collection records created by the Arizona Architectural Archives administrators and affiliates from approximately 1981-2012. The collection contains organizational records, collection records, historic property inventory forms, original and photocopied correspondence, drawings, black & white photographs, photocopied publications and newspaper clippings, photocopied maps, and handwritten collection and research notes. The bulk of the records were created between 1981-1992.

Organization

This collection is organized into three series. The files in Subseries 2 retain their original organizational structure and naming convention and are organized by a unique catalog number assigned by the Arizona Architectural Archives. The two predominant cataloging conventions used by the Arizona Architectural Archives are as follows: (1) the code "JOE" followed by a truncated year (e.g. 940 for 1940), project or job number, and the number of cataloging worksheets completed (e.g. 001-002 for two sheets); (2) the code "JOE" followed by a truncated year (e.g. 940 for 1940), a plan number, and the number of cataloging worksheets completed (e.g. 001-002 for two sheets). Some records contain catalog numbers that do not follow this convention and are yet to be determined.

Processing History

Processed by Bianca Finley Alper in 2021. Unless otherwise noted in the series and subseries descriptions, the arrangement scheme for the collection and the arrangement of the series and subseries was maintained during processing. Series II and III, and corresponding subseries, closely reflect the original processing and arrangement decisions imposed by the Arizona Architectural Archives, wherein individual architects were processed as discrete "collections" and assigned a record group number. Additional information about original processing and arrangement decisions made by the Arizona Architectural Archives is provided in a collection guide published by the Arizona Architectural Archives in 1984 and used to confirm the received order and arrangement of collection records. Series I: Organizational and collection records , 1982-2012
Scope and Contents
This series primarily consists of organizational records and notes thought to be created by individuals working with and administering to the Arizona Architectural Archives at the College of Architecture Library. The records are predominantly handwritten working notes and a few word-processed documents recording accessions, describing collections, and documenting general work conducted in the Arizona Architectural Archives. General research and miscellaneous working notes about architects held in the collection are also included in this series. This series also includes original correspondence with city and county agencies about efforts to document extant historic structures built by Josias T. Joesler in collaboration with builder, John W. Murphey. A folder of early correspondence from John W. Murphey is not in the orginal format. It was photocopied from the collections held by the Arizona Historical Society.

Series II: Architectural drawings inventory, 1981-1989
Scope and Contents
This series consists of cataloging worksheets developed by the Arizona Architectural Archives used as registration records to inventory, describe, and locate architectural drawings held in the Arizona Architectural Archives Collection. This series is organized into six subseries organized by architect. Each file in a subseries is organized in numerical order by catalog number. These catalog numbers were created by the Arizona Architectural Archives to follow architectural records naming conventions. However, to accomodate archival repository standards, the Arizona Architectural Archives assigned a record group number to identify collections as discrete entities determined by acquisition events. For example: Record Group/Project number/Year of project. These unique catalog numbers correspond to catalog numbers handwritten on folders and individual architectural drawings held by the Arizona Architectural Archives and transferred to Special Collections, University of Arizona.

Scope and Contents
This folder contains research notes about Eleazar Dias Herreras (b. 1897), an architect and engineer born in Barrio Libre in Tucson, AZ. Herreras worked on many notable projects and is perhaps best known for his restoration work as an adobe master craftsman who was the chief designer on the remodel of St. Augustine Cathedral and the 1950s restoration of of San Xavier del Bac Mission, both located in Tucson, AZ (Gresham, 1984). Herreras is known to have to worked with architect Henry O. Jaastad, but his connection to architect Josias T. Joesler is unclear at present. It is possible that the inclusion of this resesarch in the Arizona Architectural Archives records is connected to broader research (also included in this this folder) about the history of architecture, building practices, and the preservation of the historic built environment in Tucson, AZ in general.
