Arizona author Patricia Preciado Martin was born in Prescott and raised in Tucson. She received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Arizona in 1960, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Her collections of short stories and oral histories document the folklore, culture, history and lifeways of Mexican Americans in the Southern Arizona border region. Reflecting rural and urban Latinx experiences, these publications have earned her recognition from the Arizona Library Association as Arizona Author of the Year in 1997, the 2001 Southwest Book Award, the 2005 Sharlot Hall award, and multiple Chicano literary prizes.
The Patricia Preciado Martin papers contain extensive research material for the author's oral history books Beloved Land (2004) and Songs My Mother Sang to Me (1992), clippings of press about Preciado Martin's publications and career, award certificates, materials related to awards ceremonies, lectures and public appearances. Audio-visual materials include oral history audio cassettes conducted by Preciado Martin as research for her books Beloved Land and Songs My Mother Sang to Me, VHS, DVD and CD-R recordings of media appearances by Preciado Martin, and portraits by Tucson photographer Louis Carlos Bernal.
