Biographical Note

The Schmidt family participated in Colorado River raft trips led by Georgie White in 1966 and 1967. The family was from Cincinnati, Ohio. Gus Schmidt and his wife Carolyn brought their two children, Peggy and Chuck for both trips. Gus was founder and president of G.E. Schmidt Inc., welding equipment sales. Carolyn was a musician, artist, puppeteer, and volunteer. Peggy would later work as a music teacher and classical music radio broadcaster for her career, while Chuck would later earn his Ph.D. in Materials Science from Stanford University; after graduation he worked as a researcher at SRI (Palo Alto, CA) and HP (Corvallis, OR).

The family's first trip was in 1966 and they spent 7 days on the river after riding the mules down to Phantom Ranch. They enjoyed it so much that the following year (1967), they booked the full 10-day trip from Lees Ferry.
