Biographical Note

Jake C. Bracker attended Northern Arizona Normal School (NANS) - Northern Arizona State Teachers College (NASTC), now Northern Arizona University, from March, 1922, to June, 1927. During his student years at these two schools he earned a high school diploma, a two-year teaching certificate and a four year bachelor of Education degree. Jake Bracker was the first student in the history of the NASTC to receive a Bachelor of Education degree. He majored in commerce. He was the NASTC's premier student leader nad promotional genius during those critical years when NASTC was emerging from its Normal School status. He edited the school newspaper the The Pine, now the Lumberjack, managed the athletic teams, and wrote school publicity. He received many honors while attending NANS-NASTC, including the President's Prize in 1923. He also served on the planning committee for the new student union building in 1946. He was a strong supporter of the institution through the good times and the bad. He received the Alumni Service Award in 1969. Jake C. Bracker passed away January 3, 1991 in Phoenix.


Scope and Content Note

The Jake C. Bracker Collection consists of documents related to his association with Northern Arizona University, both as a student and as an Alum. The correspondence relates to Bracker's 1928 marriage, his career as a salesman, and his Alumni Service award. Bracker also kept a series of articles about NAU and NAU alums. Finally, there are a group of diplomas, certificates, and NAU memorabilia.

Thirty-eight black-and-white photographs collected by Jacob "Jake" Bracker. Most of them were taken in the early 1920s while Bracker was a student at the Normal Arizona Normal School--Northern Arizona State Teachers College (now Northern Arizona University). Many of the photographs document buildings, students, and activities at Northern Arizona Normal School in the early 1920s during Bracker's years as a student. They include images of the Main Building (now Old Main), Ashurst, the Training School Building (now the Blome Building), Taylor Hall, Bury Hall, the presidential residence, McMullen Field, football games and players, the track team, the womens' basketball team, a group of women students dressed in football uniforms, student portraits and group shots, training school students, the training school orchestra, and the wood shop. Also included are one photograph of the 1970s NAU hockey team, images of downtown Flagstaff in the 1920s, logs on lumber railroad cars, the Forester's Cabin at Walnut Canyon, the San Francisco Peaks, and Chief Indian Miller's daughter, Umaybensen.
