Biographical Note

The first officially sanctioned Chamber of Commerce pow-wow in Flagstaff, Arizona, happened in 1929. While the idea for a pow-wow had been germinating ever since Flagstaff was established in the 1880's, the modern inception of the event is attributed to Dr. Harold S. Colton of the Museum of Northern Arizona, and Jack Fuss, game warden for the National Forest Service. The pow-wow was initially under the auspice of the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce. In 1934 it became an independent entity calling itself, Flagstaff Celebrations. Then in 1938 it became Pow-Wow Incorporated. By 1975 it had once again come under the auspice of the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce. It is now operated by a consortium of Native American families.
