Raúl Hector Castro graduated from the College of Law in 1949 earning his J.D. in two and one-half years instead of the traditional three. Castro, admitted to the State Bar of Arizona in 1949, established the firm of Castro and Wolfe in Tucson, Arizona with fellow College of Law alumnus David Wolfe in 1950. Castro partnered with Wolfe for nearly five years before being sworn in as Pima County Attorney in 1954. During his time in private practice, Castro married Pat Norris and became father to Mary Pat and Beth.
Castro would serve two terms as Pima County Attorney before being elected as a Pima County Superior Court judge in 1958. He would go on to serve six years.
On October 1, 1964, Castro was appointed American ambassador to El Salvador by President Lyndon B. Johnson and served in El Salvador until he was appointed American ambassador to Bolivia in 1968. In January of 1969, Richard Nixon took office and sought to replace Castro with his own appointee. Castro returned to Tucson in the winter of 1969 after having served as a United States ambassador for five years. Pat and their daughters accompanied Castro abroad in his time as an ambassador.
On June 18, 1970 Castro announced his candidacy for governor of Arizona for the first time. Castro would go on to win the Democratic primary but lose the general election to incumbent governor Jack Williams. Four years later in 1974, Castro won the general election on November 6, 1974 by defeating Republican nominee Russell Williams. Castro became the first and, to date, only Hispanic governor in the history of the state of Arizona.
Two years later Castro resigned the governorship on October 20, 1077 to take the position of American ambassador to Argentina at the request of President Jimmy Carter. Castro would serve in the position until he chose to resign on July 30, 1980 to work as an attorney. Castro returned to Arizona and worked as a practicing attorney until the age of ninety.
On April 10, 2015 Raúl Hector Castro passed away surrounded by friends in family under hospice care in San Diego, California. Various events and tributes were made in Castro’s honor, including “Honoring an Arizona Icon” which took place in Phoenix on May 16, 2015.
The Raúl H. Castro Collection is comprised of materials that was donated to the James E. Rogers College of Law by Castro’s daughter Beth. The material documents some of Castro’s time abroad as an American ambassador and his time as governor of the state of Arizona. Much of the material was collected by Castro himself. The collection is organized into 3 series (One series, Objects, is subdivided in two series). All of the material is in English. Some of the oversized material is housed "on shelf."
