Historical Note

The American Indian Student Support Services (AISSS), formally known as the American Indian Institute (AII), was formed in 1989 by Peterson Zah and Calbert "Cal" Seciwa. Through the enactment of House Bill 2108 in 1988, the AII was established to increase enrollment, recruitment, and retention of underrepresented students in higher education. HB 2108 led to the establishment of the Native American Achievement Cohort Program in 1996 and 1997 by Peterson Zah. Zah appointed Cal as the first director of AISSS in 1989. AISSS is an academic support service for Arizona State University Native American students by providing free tutoring, academic counseling, academic success skills, cultural events, symposiums, conferences, student engagement activities, and partnerships with Native American student organizations. To recruit and retain students, AISSS offers the following: Native American Achievement, Graduate Pathways, Spirit, and Indigenous Sun Devil Transfer programs to prepare students for graduation. The annual Native American Convocation conducted by AISSS honors student achievements, their tribal nations, and tribal leaders.
