Biographical Note

Irene H. Lockridge was born to Lawrence Levering Lockridge (1897-1990) and Vallie Lou (Click) Lockridge (1901-1995) in Givin, Iowa on October 27, 1925. She had one brother, Herman Luther (1921-1975). Irene Lockridge earned her B.A. (1947) and M.A. (1949) from Baylor University and taught art at Baylor after completing her undergraduate degree. She married Orlin Corey, with whom she partnered on many theatrical productions over the course of her career, on August 25, 1949. In 1952, she joined the faculty of Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky as chair of the art department.

Irene Corey was a pioneer in theatrical makeup and design and, with her husband, produced more than 50 theatrical productions. While at Georgetown College Corey created one of her most prominent works, The Book of Job. This play was produced worldwide in addition to being a summer attraction in Kentucky's Pine Mountain State Park for 20 years. Following The Book of Job's success, Corey co-founded the Everyman Players touring company in 1957. In 1960, Orlin Corey accepted a position as Head of Speech and Drama and Director of Theatre at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. Here, Irene and Orlin Corey collaborated on productions for the institution's new Marjorie Lyons Playhouse, including Romans by St. Paul, Pilgrim's Progress, and The Tempest, which is among Corey's best-known and most respected works. Many of these shows toured around the world. In 1972, Irene Corey stepped back from touring and theatre work due to burnout. She and Orlin Corey divorced in 1973 but produced two more works, The Butterfly (1978) and Towers Over the Brazos (1982), together. She also continued her work with the Everyman Players until their final performance in 1980.

Corey moved to Dallas, Texas in the 1970s, where she worked with Peter Wolf Design Concepts in addition to teaching classes and designing productions for the Dallas Theatre Center. She married her second husband, John Barr, in 1974. Barr died in 1976. In 1983, Corey co-founded Irene Corey Design Associates with her niece, Suzanne Lockridge. Here, she helped design such well-known characters as Barney and the Wiggles. She also presented lectures and workshops on the subjects of makeup and theatrical design worldwide. Corey authored two textbooks on makeup and theatrical design during her career, The Mask of Reality (1968) and The Face is a Canvas (1990). Irene Corey died of Parkinson's disease in Dallas on October 13, 2010.
