Biographical Note

Henry Stanley McCluskey, attorney and union organizer, was born on July 1, 1887 at Goshen, New York to James and Mary Finn McCluskey. He was educated in the public schools and attended the New York Garr Institute and the Rand School for Social Science in New York City.

McCluskey arrived in Arizona in 1912, already associated with the American Federation of Labor. In 1918 he became a member of the Arizona Board of Regents. In 1921 McCluskey was appointed associate editor of the Arizona Daily Silver Belt and in 1922 he was elected president of the Arizona State Federation of Labor. McCluskey was appointed private secretary to Governor George W. P. Hunt, member of the Colorado River Commission and member of the Arizona Industrial Commission, in 1923. He served with both of these commissions until 1928.

McCluskey was admitted to the Arizona State Bar in 1927 and practiced law through the 1930s, specializing in labor law and workman compensation cases. McCluskey served as chief legal adviser to the Arizona Industrial Commission from 1942 to 1952, when he retired from the commission due to ill health. McCluskey died in Phoenix on March 22, 1968. He was survived by his wife, Helen M. (Budrek) McCluskey (1902-1986).
