Historical Note

The Arizona Eastern Railroad Company was first listed in the Interstate Commerce Commission's Statistics of Railways in the United States in 1907, where it appears as a one mile subsidiary of the Phoenix & Eastern Railway. It was formally incorporated in 1910 and operated until it was merged into the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1955.

For more detailed information about the railroad, researchers may wish to consult Paul P. Anspach's The Building of the Arizona Eastern Railroad (thesis: University of Southern California, 1947; call number HE2791.A73 A5x).

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists primarily of photographs documenting the construction of the Arizona Eastern Railroad, including bridges, track, and buildings along the lines from Picacho (Cholla Mountain) to Chandler and from Calva to Pierdot. Most of these images show bridges, including the Gila River, Agua Fria, and San Carlos River bridges. Other photographs depict steam shovels, pile drivers, and other heavy equipment used in construction; flood damage to the Gila River Bridge, including salvage of heavy equipment and damage to track; the materials yard at Pozo, Arizona; buildings in Avondale, Buckeye, Kofa, and other Arizona locales; telegraph facilities and inspection cars; and track gangs and inspection crews. Also included are images of Coolidge Dam taken when the Calva to Peridot line was moved due to the construction of the Coolidge Dam Reservoir and photographs of the residence of James B. Kitch, Indian Agent on the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Most of these pictures were taken by an unidentified photographer; some were taken by W. H. Moulthrop, Office and Field Manager, and one was made by H. P. Kelker. Most have typed captions.
