Excavations at Garden Canyon, 1994-1997

Scope and Content Note

Series 1. 1964-1990 YOUNG: Although the first excavation was completed by Jon Young and his crew in 1964, his report and data was configured up until the early 70s. In this category we have included all Garden Canyon related archival data until the next major Garden Canyon milestone occurs. This series includes the original collection information from the 1964 excavations and the National register of the Garden Canyon Village Site. Information is sparse and poorly documented and is only held in photocopies as the originals were destroyed by Fort Huachuca Criminal Investigation Command (CID) (nee: Division). A major portion of this series includes an Army Investigation in the 1980s in search missing artifacts from the Fort. The investigation was inconclusive however the paperwork archive has various forms that include correspondence and loan documents pertaining to Garden Canyon and various military personnel, Fort Huachuca Museum inventory lists, and photocopies of excavation notes.

Series 2. 1990-1993 COTTRELL/SRI (Statistical Research, Inc.): The post archaeologist at the time, Marie Cottrell, conducted her own excavations that were poorly documented with limited to no data available. The data is presented in the level sheets dated in this time. This portion also includes Statistical Research’s Inc. report about these excavations and their collections and their partial analysis (1993) as they were contracted under Cottrell.

Series 3. 1994-1999 MURRAY: This portion of the archives represents the most significant portion of this project, it contains the open excavations done by John Murray, post archaeologist, in 1994 to the shutdown of the site for good with the finding of human remains in 1999 per NAGPRA stipulations. This category contains all field work done in this time and its documentation including field notes, inventories, provenience lists, photos, etc. This portion represents the bulk of the archival data with duplicate copies integrated as well as original field work forms.

Series 4. 2000-2003 Fort Huachuca: This portion of the Garden Canyon Archives contains the partial analysis work done in Lab after the previous excavations. The work was mostly done by volunteers at Fort Huachuca under the supervision of Post Archaeologist, Charles Slaymaker. The data is incomplete as Slaymaker decided to house Fort Huachuca’s collections at the Arizona State Museum for curation and management in 2003. The collection was moved to ASM for processing and further analysis. This collection portion is an addition added to the excavations in the 1990s where volunteers were continuously doing lab work and OPAC was contracted for a database (included in this series).

Series 5. 2003-2008, 2021 Arizona State Museum: This series of the archival data includes all of ASM’s involvement in the curation of the Garden Canyon Collection. This includes catalogue documents, updated provenience lists, bulk box inventory, database entry, loan documents and other curation management documents. This series is also associated with the SWCA’s loan agreement with ASM.

Series 6. 2007-2008 SWCA Environmental Consultants: This portion represents SWCA’s work with the Garden Canyon Excavations. They conducted a loan with ASM and analyzed multiple boxes of the collection. This series includes copies of previous reports, level forms, maps, etc., as well as SWCA’s notes and analyses of the Garden Canyon collection. Their two-volume report is included with the archives.

Access to specific information about the nature and location of archaeological resources may be restricted pursuant to the United States Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA) and Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 39-125. ARPA includes a specific exemption from the the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requirements for information about the nature and location of archaeological resources (16 U.S. Code 470hh: Confidentiality of information concerning the nature and location of archaeological resources).

Custodial History

The Arizona State Museum acquired, in trust, The Garden Canyon Collection in 2003 from US Army Fort Huachuca, where it has been held since 1964. The procurement of the current ASM’s collections is an accumulation of multiple stages since 1964 and were all accessioned and associated with the same village site AZ EE:11:13(ASM) and accession AP-2003-400. All archival, catalog, bulk, and photo collections for Garden Canyon will be marked under those numbers. Since the collection of materials happened over multiple stages, specifically the archival data will reflect each of those SIX stages and be stored for future research in those categories.
