	Abstract:	This collection includes original manuscripts concerning Native Americans, Arizona military posts, and journeys in the Southwest. Holograph manuscripts in various hands include observations of Apaches while stationed at Camp Grant, 1866-1867; life and events at Camp Lincoln (Camp Verde), 1865-1866; observations made while living among the Pima Indians, 1885; Yuma Indians, 1867, 1885-1889; a journey from Fort Mohave to Williams Fork copper mines, 1870; a journey from Prescott to La Paz, 1869; Montezuma Well, ca 1866; and Civil War notes, 1861-1866.

	Abstract:	J.H. Stout was a U.S. Special Indian Agent for U.S. Indian Agency at the Gila River Indian Reservation. The collection contains a holograph, carbon letter book covering the period December 1, 1871 to March 21, 1875. Letters are from Stout chiefly to his superiors and benefactors back east and describe the needs and conditions of the people and the reservation school.
