 Date(s):  1877-1891 
 Abstract:  John S. Delano and Joseph Workman Dwyer were owners of the D. & D. Ranch. Dwyer, a Washington D.C. official, moved to New Mexico in 1876, and began raising sheep at Uña de Gato Creek. He and Delano then became partners in a large-scale cattle enterprise, also known as the D. & D. Ranch Co., at Johnson's Mesa. Dwyer sold out to become involved in real estate, in 1892. Three recording books containing livestock branding records and accounts of the operation and maintenance of the ranch in Otero, Colfax County, New Mexico. Some may also apply to Dwyer's Uña de Gato Ranch.

Portfolio containing chiefly correspondence, along with legal documents, bills, and financial records related to Montague Stevens and his ranching operations. Correspondence and telegrams mostly concern problems with his financial backers in England. Specific files for the S.U. Cattle Co. and the Shropshire Sheep Co. contain business correspondence regarding supplies and equipment, as well as legal papers.

Items of interest include real photo postcards which show images of: the Alvarado in Albuquerque (postmarked Anapra 1908); the Catholic Church in Las Cruces (postmarked Acme 1909); the Overland Limited Train (postmarked Black Tower 1910); Deming, NM (postmarked Carne 1912); a cattle ranch near Portales (postmarked Carter, 1907); a birdseye view of Folsom (postmarked Cuates, 1911); the Institute for the Blind, Alamogordo (postmarked Carrizozo); the hospital at Dawson, 1909; Main Street, Tucumcari, (postmarked Dodson 1911); Mexican Revolution politician Federico Gonzalez Garza (postmarked Elephant Butte 1911); Main Street, Melrose (postmarked House 1910); Tucumcari High School (postmarked Hanley 1911); the wholesale district, El Paso, (postmarked Lanark 1908); unknown building in Lamy, 1906; Main Street Las Cruces, 1908; the Church at Isleta Pueblo (postmarked Leopold 1906); St. Anthony’s Sanitarium at Las Vegas, 1910 (Postmarked Levy and Porvenir 1910); Lodge at Cloudcroft, (postmarked Mountain Park); Bravo Ranch Quarters (postmarked Nara Visa 1908); Chaves Courthouse in Roswell (postmarked Orchard Park 1911) Pipeline from Mountains (postmarked Orogrande 1907); Alameda Park Depot and Office Bldg, Alamogordo (postmarked Oscuro 1908); President Porfirio Diaz in a parade at El Paso (postmarked Pearl 1909); Souvenir of Silver Springs, (postmarked Silver Springs 1911); View of Sylanite (postmarked Sylvanite 1909); Street Scene, Silver City (postmarked Tyrone, 1910). A number of picture cachets are also in the collection, including: a cachet of St. Michaels College (postmarked Santa Fe 1889); a cachet with a map of Colorado and New Mexico (postmarked Lookout 1880); and a cachet for “A. Gusdorf Grain Mill (postmarked Ranches of Taos, 1888). Letters in the collection include: a letter from a teacher describing Christmas celebrations and social events in 1907 in Alma; letters about the economy (lumber, farming, mining), horses and people and a postcard, from Copperton, 1905; a letter from a German speaking soldier at, Fort Stanton, 1886; a letter about Statehood Day and taxes (postmarked Lakewood, 1912); a letter about house construction in Madison; a letter saying “thanks for the tobacco” and about organizing a Breeder’s Association in Mesilla, 1906; a letter with details of raising and selling hogs, Ruidoso, 1911; a letter about bad condition of the church and school, Silver City, 1909; and a letter which is described as the writers “last correspondence from the New Mexico Territory”. Other interesting items include: a cover from Gascom dated 1900, signed by the postmaster on the closing date of the post office; a handwritten postmark, dated 1878, Loma Parda; a handwritten postmark and letter from Turquesa 1881; a postmark from the KC and La Jolla RPO (postmarked Melrose, 1908); covers from 1874 and 1875, Santa Fe.

Prices and quantities for groceries bought and sold are given.
