 Abstract:  The Clinton Jencks Papers contain materials documenting Jencks' labor organizing activities with the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelters Workers in the southwest from 1950 to 1957. Of particular interest are the items showing the fifteen-month Empire Zinc strike in Hanover, New Mexico (led by Local 890, IUMMSW) and the Jencks Case. Also included are IUMMSW union memorandums; newsletters; and newspaper articles, magazine articles, and printed matter discussing Jencks' activities as the International Union Representative of the Amalgamated Bayard District Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers Local 890 (whose membership was primarily Mexican American). The collection has been divided into six series.

The names of New Mexico residents are noted in several of the ledgers in regards to packages and COD records. The collection provides a history of postal operations in New Mexico and is of particular use to those interested in postal history and genealogy.

 Abstract:  Jose Romero was a Lieutenant Colonel, Sonora, Mexico; leader of 1823-1826 expeditions to establish an inland route between Sonora, Mex. and California. Collection contains a letter (photocopy) to Mariana de Urrea, Commandante General de Sonora, from Romero in San Gabriel, Calif., recounting his experiences in attempting unsuccessfully to return to Sonora in the winter of 1823-1824 through the Palm Springs area, and describing the mail route between Tucson and San Gabriel which was conducted by Jose Cocomaricopa, the bearer of this letter, via the Colorado River route.

 Abstract:  Vélez de Escalante, better known as Escalante, was a Spanish Franciscan missionary sent to New Mexico in 1774; he was the recorder of this 1776 expedition. Domínguez, a Mexican Franciscan priest, was his ecclesiastical superior and leader of the expedition. Collection includes eighteenth-century copy of the diary kept by Vélez de Escalante on his expedition with Dominguez through the four corners area of the American Southwest, July 29, 1776 to Jan. 2, 1777.

 Abstract:  The major portion of the collection contains instructional bulletins, lecture notes, and printed materials that were used by the Fred Harvey Company for training couriers. These bulletins demonstrate the depth of knowledge that a courier was expected to master and convey to travelers during the tours. Most of the materials relates to northern New Mexico sites. Additional materials include maps and trip logs, expenses for one of her trips, and four black and white photographs, chiefly posed group portraits of individuals in courier dress.
