 Abstract:  Collection consists primarily of files maintained by Lawrence Clark Powell during his residency in Tucson and his tenure at the University of Arizona. Includes correspondence, research files, transcripts of talks, and manuscripts of a variety of books and articles. Much of the collection documents his activities at the University of Arizona, as well as writings he completed during the 1970s and 1980s. Selected correspondents include Edward Abbey, Ansel Adams, Bruce Babbitt, and Paul Horgan. Most of the collection is maintained in the original order in which the files were kept by Powell.

 Abstract:  Dr. Harold A. Widdison was a sociologist who taught at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff for 30 years. In addition to his professional work and research he was very interested in documenting prehistoric rock art and traveled extensively to visit hundreds of sites. This collection consists of slides, photographs, maps, and other documentation of both well-known and more obscure rock art sites visited by Widdison, mostly in the American Southwest but also throughout Canada, Mexico, and Europe.

 Abstract:  This exceptional photo-journal chronicles a 1936 motor trip which began in Butte, Montana and covered much of the southwest. The author of the journal, William Wares, describes excavating a site at Awatobi, hunting mountain lions in Utah, and the beauty of numerous geographic landmarks such as the Grand Canyon and Goosenecks of the San Juan country. The journal also mentions Yellowstone National Park and the Teton mountains. An Anglo, Wares made cultural observations about the Navajo and Hopi as well as the inhabitants of Mormon towns. Some of the pages in this journal contain images of culturally sensitive material. Restrictions for duplicating selected culturally sensitive photographic images apply.

 Abstract:  Vélez de Escalante, better known as Escalante, was a Spanish Franciscan missionary sent to New Mexico in 1774; he was the recorder of this 1776 expedition. Domínguez, a Mexican Franciscan priest, was his ecclesiastical superior and leader of the expedition. Collection includes eighteenth-century copy of the diary kept by Vélez de Escalante on his expedition with Dominguez through the four corners area of the American Southwest, July 29, 1776 to Jan. 2, 1777.
