 Abstract:  The Sanctuary Movement was a religious and political campaign that began in the early 1980s to provide safety for Central American refugees fleeing civil conflicts within their home countries. This collection contains materials related to the Sanctuary Movement and, more specifically, the highly publicized Sanctuary Trial that took place in Arizona. Within the collection are attorney files, certified trial transcripts, publicity materials, and trial notebooks. Also represented in the collection are donated materials from the American Friends Service Committee and the Southside Presbyterian Church, who were important players in the Sanctuary Movement. Materials from these organizations include correspondence, newspaper clippings, publications and trial materials.

The correspondence in this collection provides a snapshot of the life experiences of Amanda Graham, a woman living in the Arizona Territory during the early 1900s, along with those of her family and acquaintances located throughout various regions of the country. Family news, health, and crop growth are a few of the topics discussed. The collection also includes a few pieces of business correspondence, such as bills and credit notifications. From a postal history perspective, the envelopes may be of interest because of the flag cancels and Tucson Territorial backstamps.

From programming to grants written and received to the Wingspan Film Festival materials to organizational materials related to bylaws, executive director notes, and meeting minutes, this collection offers a full historical picture of Wingspan, Southern Arizona's LGBTQ Community Center which closed its doors in July 2014. This collection is part of the Arizona Queer Archives (AQA), a community focused archive through the Institute for LGBT Studies at the University of Arizona. It was transferred to Special Collections in 2020.
