Serving in the Union Army during the Civil War where he reached the rank of General. Later, he served in the U.S. Interior Department as railroad surveyor and engineer. Much of the correspondence pertains to his work with the Memphis and El Paso Railroad, later to become the Texas Pacific Railroad where he served as Chief of Engineers.
