of the Arizona Jewish Post, sports editor at the Arizona Daily Star, and professor at
the University of Arizona School of Journalism from 1976-1988. From 1988 to 1994, Chanin
was director of the Bloom Southwest Jewish Archive at the University of Arizona. This
collection contains interviews created by Abraham Chanin dating 1974-1977 with prominent
Arizona settlers, politicians, University of Arizona faculty, and members of Native

inventories, collected by Powell, include information on birds, amphibians and reptiles
(identified as 'herps' in the inventories), mammals, and plants at different locations

water-related politics, senators, and other historical subjects. His collection includes
his personal materials, professional files, research files, writings, audiovisual
materials, and memorabilia he collected throughout his life. August taught at several
different institutions and held various positions at colleges, universities, and other
history-focused institutions. He served as an expert witness on key pieces of water
rights legislation in the state of Arizona. He researched several prominent Arizonan
politicians including Barry Goldwater, Dennis DeConcini, and Evan Mecham. He also did
several research projects surrounding Wade Church, Jim Chilton, the New Mexico Bar
Association, and John R. Norton III, amongst others. A large portion of his research
files are dedicated to water politics of Arizona including, but not limited to ANSAC,
the CAP, the Colorado River Controversy, Native American/indigenous water rights, the

founding of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Studies at the University of Arizona beginning in
1993. The collection also includes the events and programming that the Committee for
Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Studies put on from 1993 through 2015. In 2007, the Committee
was formally re-established as the Institute for LGBT Studies, and in 2023 was
re-established as the UA LGBTQ+ Institute. This collection is part of the Arizona
Queer Archives (AQA), a community focused archive through the Institute for LGBT
Studies at the University of Arizona. It was transferred to Special Collections in

Hughes established the Arizona Daily Star in 1877 and published it until his death. This collection
contains a letter copybook of Hughes' correspondence while serving as Governor of Arizona Territory.
Letters include references to appointments, recommendations, the territorial prison, and the Board of Regents.
